  • My Secret Knitting Laboratory

Date: 2005.02.13 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 0

Well I have been busy knitting, but it is a secret project for a contest… hehe. So I cannot show it to you until the voting is done.. the project is nearly done.. which is good cause I have about.. let’s see..Oh no problem .. six hours to get it in!

I am getting interested in these ‘Stitches (East, West) and especially Midwest.. events!! Midwest is in August and it’s not too far from here. Brian is already talking about plane tickets for me.. I was thinking road trip!
Ah well, there is always the county fiber festival this summer too!!

I have also discovered Knitting Universe! Very nice.. I sure hope that new loom comes, cause I have been dreaming in knitting again! I already have a backlog! First the sweater for Isela, then the poncho for Azia, then I have some fantastic, and devilishly wonderful ideas!! UGH! come on loom!
I am waiting patiently:roll: , in the mean time I will have to knit up some Mary Jane Parkers for myself with that cool yarn that Charlie sent me! I think that it will be just enough! (fortunately I have small feet!)

Then I have all that casscade 220, the Christmas wool, and the bagful of smelly yarn I got from Freecycle!
(Which now has lost it’s smell and turned out pretty well if you like 70′s colours)
I shall be busy! Well off to finish the contest piece, and start my slippers!

I’ll post some pics when I can!

  • Oooh a package!!

Date: 2005.02.11 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 1

Well now I can quit being jealous of justcinful! I got my own little package!!

At first I didn’t know who it was from!!
Then I realised oh! It’s from Charlie! It’s my prize from the KWONYarnTraders contest!

    Cool!

    Look what I got!

    Yeah!

Well now what to do with it???
We will have to hang the postcard on the fridge, and the seeds will wait till spring! but the yarn… hmmmm.. It’s cute!

  • She Musta Been a Beautiful Baby!

Date: 2005.02.10 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 3

Well I can’t believe it! My daughter is 7 years old! Time flies! I also can’t believe that I am typing this post for the third time! The little one can reach the escape key(which has now been popped off the keyboard) very well!
Well we had a little fun, teasing her all day as to the fact that there was no cake! We really had her going! Brian came home, with plenty of grocery bags, but no cake. I went to the grocery store while they were at children’s choir perctice, and came home with a LARGE box of diapers, and other items, no cake.. well unless you count the chocolate coated rice cakes! Well we could put candles on them right?

Well the fact is we had gotten a cake:

    Happy Birthday!

So all was well! (Brian had gotten a nice number candle.. uh.. number 6.. oops, he had been up till the wee hours the night before, and had done the math at least three times!) Needless to say, we quickly tucked that away and put 7 nice candles on the cake and proceeded to celebrate!
So no knitting, my wrist still aches a little from that needle knitting the other night!
Ah well, tonight is a good sit and knit night! I think I am going to throw my hat in the ring on the Valentine’s Day contest for the Deccor Accents group, since my new loom is delayed a bit!(Sam the loom maker extrodinaire got hurt, and the computer went down.. double whammy! ) I better get cracking on it if I am going to get it done!

  • What do I do with these pointy sticks?

Date: 2005.02.08 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 0

Well the knitting meetup was tonight and so I thought I would yet again learn some new knitting tricks from the ladies in our group! They are excellent teachers!
So I got a pattern for a Fishnet pattern dishcloth online and started the thing at home. The first four rows were easy! All garter stitch, I can handle that! I had ten years on my husbands scarf to perfect that!

    Then it got harder..
SSK? What’s that? I got out my handy dandy Yarn Girl’s Knitting Journal and looked it up, ok, I slip the sitches onto the other needle and then knit em..
Ok.. not too bad.. YO.. yarn over.. also pretty easy.. putting a hole in your work on purpose. Ok.. K2tog. that’s also easy.. knit two together.. and Purl, no problem Carrie showed me how to do that last time!! Ok..
Put em all together in one row.. hehehe. Well it turned out pretty good so far!

    Not a bad start!

Here is a little close up of the pattern:
Yep those holes are supposed to be there..

Now of course my motivation to try this out on needles is to dissect the stitch as it is done on needles and then translate it into loom speak! As I was sitting there in Cafe Mommus knitting away on the pattern I really couldn’t see how to do that. But it hit me when I got home. Now I have to try it out on my looms!

It would be a first fishnet pattern on the loom I believe. The knitting boards have some looser ‘airy’ type wrap patterns but nothing like this! It would be cool to figure it out!
But my hands are SORE and it’s late so it will just have to wait till tommorow!

I also know why I can’t needle knit at home! Once I started talking I lost my place in the pattern. And at home… ‘Don’t hit your sister!’,:???: ‘Get back from the TV!’ ”Did you wash your hands?” ’ No, Mommy is not a jungle gym!’ So the knitting looms are sure a better fit, for now at least! I can see getting into it and doing a little more of needle knitting, eventually. For now it will have to wait for mainly when I am out of the house!

  • Adventures Outside the Kitchen!

Date: 2005.02.06 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 3

Well today was a pretty good day. No more adventures in the kitchen. I met Allison. Yes Allison who won the contest! She lives not too far away, and goes to church even closer so she came and picked up her prize!
Got to see her daughters famous poncho too! Beautiful! Allison does great work!

And speaking of famous peices of knitting, Allison got to see the finished sweater first hand!
She says it looks pretty good! And so do all the people at church so I guess I better post a picture here.

    C'est Fini!

The flowers are from my secret sister at church! I hope I don’t kill them! I don’t have a good track record with plants!

Well it was a bit of a trial finishing up the second half of the sweater top! I had to rip out a few rows again because even though I was using a row counter; I lost count!

    Oh well!
I still think I might make some sleeves. I haven’t decided yet.
    It sure is warm!

Our adventures today took place outside of the house. For the first time out of four children I had to carry out the threat of leaving the store and getting in the car and going home. This followed a trip to the mall for a birthday present, and a struggle to get away from the 50 cent ride on toys. Then off to Kmart to get another item, and THE FIT.. Julian decided that he wanted candy from the candy machine, and after running around a Valentine’s day display three or four times trying to figure out a way to get to them, he saw a break between the service desk and the display and ran for it!
He would not move away from the machines. He would not get into a cart, he was not going to give up the idea that he was going to get one of those plastic balls filled with wonderfully interesting items that are meant to tempt children into tourturing their parents with whines and cries and fake fainting spells and the like till they give in and pull out the quarters and get it! At least he didn’t start screaming.. well till Brian called. Yep in the middle of trying to wrangle a writhing three year old my phone rings..

And not only does he call but he wants to have a nice chat.. about dinner, and where I was, and why wasn’t I just leaving the grocery story because certianly by now I would have been through all three stops, and mabye I should get dinner at a drive thru, and oh Julian isn’t behaving he’s usually good expecially when he is with his older brother.. and… (then Jaxom starts picking on Julian who I have managed to get on the bench while talking on the phone.. And Julian starts yelling) and get the family meal at Long John’s and don’t forget to ask for crumbs (it would be a miracle at this point if I remembered where my brain was) I said ok I really need to goooooooo!
So I gave him one more chance.. walk nicely with Mommy? NO! Sit in the cart for Mommy? NO!
Ok then we are going home! NOOOOOO!
So I carry a screaming, kicking, crying three year old out of the Kmart, followed by a sad faced 8 year old.. out to the van, still kicking a SCREAMING.. and get him into the car seat. Then I call Brian back, he doesn’t answer, here’s what the message sounds like.. bloodcurtling scream.. (Julian) Hi we had to leave the store he wouldn’t cooperate (another scream) so we are going to pick up dinner and come home Bye!

So we drive to the bank, him screaming the whole way! I want go Kmart.. scream, sob sob, scream, I want go Kmart..
Get to the bank, forget my new pin number, have to enter it twice, get the money and drive to the LJS.. scream, sob sob, My want Kmart!
I am sure that the drive thru cashier thought I was strangling him, I told him I would get a soda for him to sip since by now his throat was raw.. I ask for crumbs.. I WANT SODA, Yes Mommy said you would get soda.. pay he gets the soda, and all is quiet. Till his older brother decides, one minute away from home that he needs to be reminded that he is not going to Kmart, MY WANT KMART! scream, sob scream all the way home. He will not get out of the car seat and tries to buckle in again, I should have left him there, so I again carry a kicking and screaming three year old into the house up the stairs and plop onto the couch next to Brian.
Did you get dinner?? he asks. YES!!
    It’s in the car.
So we get everyone to the table for dinner.
Open up the bags, NO CRUMBS.. hey it’s on the receipt!

  • The Adventures of the Kitchen

Date: 2005.02.05 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 2

I entered an essay in a contest the local paper had to win a $1000 room redecorating.
I decided to enter the kitchen and out of 321 entries.. mine apparently was 321!
I just went down and retrieved the paper from the end of the driveway and another person had won.. I hadn’t even made it to the top twenty! In the end after reading the article I think that my room was put in the pile of rooms that were too bad to have their needs met with $1000; but hey they do it on Trading Spaces all the time!
So here is my entry for your enjoyment. Azia and I worked on it together and based it one of her favourite books Today I Feel Silly by Jamie Lee Curtis.

    Today I feel chilly
    My kitchen is cold,
The windows are drafty and the linoleum is old.

Today I’m cranky nothing seems right
The microwave’s broken and cooking dinner takes all night.
    The counters are orange,
    Wallpaper striped blue,
    This kitchen looks weird,
    Oh what will I do?
    Our waters not tasty,
    It comes from our well,
A water filtration sure would be swell.

Today I am angry; you better stay clear!
The baby gets into everything, cleanup takes a year!
So as you can see baby proofing’s a must
I really need some new ideas I can trust!

Today I feel worried the floor’s a big NO!
There’s rusty nail heads and staples,
    Where little feet go.

I’d rather feel excited or glad,
Than worried, chilly, angry or sad.

So please Beacon Journal come improve my mood,
Please make my kitchen safe and warm for my brood.

Well there were many other adventures for our kitchen in the last two days..

First Winnie the Pooh came for a visit!
    Yummmmy!
Or oh.. that’s not Pooh Bear it’s Caleb! Off to the tub!

Then there was a lovely father daughter cooking class..
    Yummy Pancakes!

And while that was going on … behind them..

    Yummmmmmyy cinamon!

So after Mom and Dad groused at each other a bit.. the usual ‘why’d you let them do that?’;and Julian kicked cinamon in the little guy’s face. Both were wisked off to the tub for yet another scrubbing!
Then of course Caleb being in the tub and free of a diaper did what babies do;he went poo in the tub! Quickly both were wisked out of the tub. The coast being cleared in the kitchen I took him downstairs and went back for his brother. And there on the edge of the tub was the cat, who had decided that the poo looked like an interesting creature in the tub. YOW!
Ah. Now all is well, all boys are restored to clean, clothes and bellies full of pancakes.

As for knitting, my sweater is *done* and in the wash. So a post will be entered later on that subject!
