  • The yarn that was a dare!

Date: 2005.11.30 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 4

A couple of years ago my birthmother was at an art festival in upper state New York.
She was there with my birthfather, my brother and my grandmother.

They came across the strangest wool that they had ever seen. So naturally given my new (at the time) intrest in all things yarn, they bought it for me.

It was Cherry Tree Hill thick n thin in some nice blues greens and browns. In two words it was good stuff.
So it has been sitting in my stash, waiting. Taunting. What will you make with me? What do you dare?

Then Jane came into my radar. She makes the most amazing things with all sorts of unusual yarns. Novelty yarns, ribbon yarns adding baubles and shapes that are rather amazing.

Then Jane put out a challenge for those who read her blog to create a free range scarf.

    It was on.

Now it was a double dare!
I knew this was what this yarn was for.
There was no other yarn for it.

    So I took off.
My parents were in for Thanksgiving so I asked my mother to pick a number. Any number.
    She chose 18.
So I cast on three stitches increased up to 18 and went from there.

It is rather unique there are leaves that will hang down in the center back, and the spiral section is from Scarf Style the ruffles pattern adjusted at the end as I decreased.
I added in a little bit of fun fur and a couple other novelty yarns as I went along.

All in all it was fun.

It was a challenge. I learned how to do the spirals, dropped stitches, knitting backward on short rows. It was a great excercise.

Why don’t you try one of your own?

    I dare ya!

    UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!

Well thedare worked out! Jane picked my name from the two entries she got!
    So this

    is mine!

    YEAH!

    And this

is what will happen to the rest of the Cherry Tree Hill yarn. Something a little less free range!
I am loving that KnitScene magazine!

No. Not my book. This book.

Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter

Since I was unable to aquire a signed copy and I saw it on the shelf at the bookstore last night.. dreadfully miss shelved. I picked it up. It wouldn’t leave my hand! Really. I just couldn’t leave it there.
Ah well there could be worse things.

    So I brought it home.

After doing the happy new book dance as I showed it to my husband, I set it down on the couch to go get a nice cup of tea in preparation of curling up by the fireplace and reading said book.

When I returned it was gone.

    Me: where’s my book
    Him: what book
Me: my new book the Yarn Harlot book
Him: I dunno where’d you put it.
ME: right here on the couch.
Him: oh I don’t think its in this room (he says as backing out of the room.
Me: alright where is it?(as I am franticaly looking all over the room)
Him:I’m telling you it’s not in this room
    Me: well it was here.

After seraching all surfaces of the room and moving on to the others:

Me: alright where did you put it?
    Him: who me?

And there it was tucked in the back of his sweater.

He then took it and dissapeared.
    He read the chapter DPN’s
He came back down and said I needed to read it, it ‘sounded familiar’

    UGH

My little Julian kept me up all night in labour!
And then for 18 months after that as well.

And you can see he is still disturbing my sleep by taking over our bed nearly every night.
oh dear looks like he is picking his nose!
    Happy Birthday little guy!

    never boils.

A paycheck never comes soon enough

A single hand knit mitten never clones itself.

Hot cookies never cool off fast enough.

    A sick mommy doesn’t knit.

And tommorrow always comes to quickly when you have a deadline.

Really Jane.. I’m trying, but tommorrow is just coming too fast!!
I have learned alot from knitting this free range scarf already!!
    More on it tommorrow.

  • Just another quiet weekend

I’m sick.. just ask Janette.. I didn’t even send in an answer for the last contest question. Yeah it’s been that bad.
Oh well.. I didn’t need a whole pack of Jaeger Trinity yarn did I? In it’s lucious soft silken blend. Sigh.

I was able to knit a bit.
I got one repeat done on my skirt.

It’s about halfway done and looking good.

And I got a little work done on the free range scarf, got a little more novelty yarn to add to it. And I have a bit of a plan for the finish.

Brian was in charge for much of the weekend.
Me: Why doesn’t Caleb have a diaper on?
Brian: Oh, I must have skipped that step.

Really it was not a Lord of the Flies weekend. Aside from the occasional escape from the diaper.
I did get to church but had to walk out three times during the service because of coughing fits. I did get to the grocery store to get supplies for the week.

I didn’t get even half of the cleaning done that I wanted to.
Mom and Dad are off in New Jersey visiting for the week, then they will be back on the weekend till their flight back home on next Tuesday. So I need to clean again.
I figured out what happened with my secret pal. She moved. Nice new digs (I checked em’ out on Google earth, I heart Google earth) So hopefully she is settling in, getting the curtains hung, and getting the furniture arranged just so and all that!! Looks like it was one of those annoying moves.. ya know just down the road.. those are the worst!

Well I have to get my little students working.
    OI.
    One sneeze at a time.

  • It’s mine all mine!

I got a package from my secret pal! (yippeee she’s still out there!)
    Here is the loot!

    Scarf style is all mine!
Now some day I will make that color on color scarf .. really I will.. really..
I will I mean it.. I just need to find the yarn..
    and the time..
    and more time..
    hmm

And here is a first in knitblogger land.. at least as far as I have seen..

yes.. all the chocolate is in there.

    (not for long)

It was clearly an October package because there were some cute Halloween stickers for my kids in there.. Julian likes them! ANd Caleb tried to eat the pumpkin scented candle! eek!

Thanks pal! I do wish I knew what delayed it this time and if there is anything I can do to help! (you know besides babysitting.. the commute would be a little tough)
oops see half the chocolates are gone..

Paying the bills…
