Cooking Disasters ala Scout!
Ok so I posted already today.. but hey I must obey Scout!
First let me say that I cannot believe it is snowing in NM!! Isn’t it like warm there all year long?? I am sooooo not moving there!
Oh well knock that one off my list.
Ok. My worst cooking disaster.. hmm there are so many to share.. I am really not a bad cook…really (hmm maybe I should turn the comments off on this one) Well I will tell you my most public one!!
Way back in once upon a time time.. back when I was kid free (well almost…) and care free..(ok that’s a joke I was assistant director of a daycare/Headstart that had about 120 kids enrolled) I was the one who was supposed to bake the pumpkin pies for big family Thanksgiving dinner. It was Thanksgiving Eve, and I had barely gotten home from work when they called. (I lived within walking distance.. lucky me) A large light fixture had fallen from the ceiling, and the LIVE wires were hanging down sparking.. there was water dripping from the ceiling, nah..pouring from the ceiling..
o………k
I was 6 months pregnant.. so Brian naturally would not let me go handle this by myself. So off we went to the rescue. Indeed.. it was A MESS!
We quickly found the correct breaker in the breaker box to cut off the power. Went upstairs and found that the one toilet had totally overflowed and the whole bathroom was flooded. The water had found it’s way through the floor and into the light fixture.. which filled up with water then came down with a crash.
Brian bravely started bailing the bathroom, while I ran and made the appropriate phone calls. By the time our relief came we had pretty much gotten all the water up from the bathroom at least. And I still had pies to bake..
We rushed home, I got to work on the pie crusts and sent Brian out to get the filling ingredients some much needed dinner and some other things..
He brought it home and I thinking he got the stuff that you split between two pies.. and not looking.. split the filling between two pies and baked.. we ended up with basically two giant pumpkin crackers.. and no time to make new ones..
But dang it! We took them anyway!
Next time.. perhaps I will tell you the story of my famous flaming garlic bread!!

Our Group it is a growing!!!
Last night was Stitch n B* and our usual population of 2 grew to 5 + a visitor!
Ashley and I were there, Laura brought Jorge.. Jason.. Jacamo whatever we are calling him.. and Susan came from my invite at my DH’s office party. So we had a good time.. And Laura’s husband stopped by and even dropped off some yarn for her! Isn’t that sweet..!
Here is Jorge.. I sooooo stole this pic from Laura..
He is MUCH further along on this scarf now. Its about 18 inches long! And it’s not all wonky like usual beginner knitter things! Jorge definitely has some knitterly potential..
Overheard at my house:
“Angels live inside Rainbows..” Caleb 3 too cute I think we will keep him..

Now I know why David Tennent is so campy as Dr. Who..
There is a buzz around here as we super huge Dr. Who fans wait for the Christmas Special..It is definitely an advantage having a husband who is technologically gifted. We have been following the series on BBC 1 about and hour after it airs in the UK for the last two seasons. None of this waiting till it comes to the Sci Fi channel!
It has been downright painful watching some of you catch up!!
Anyway.. the main complaint about David Tennent being Dr. Who is that he has been so cheerful and campy.. well I have figured out why.. it’s the shoes!

you see. I have never ever put on a pair of Converse All Stars… well that is till yesterday. I put them on and OI! I feel campy!!
It’s all in the shoes.. (though I do think that Rose Tyler had something to do with it.. )DO NOT click on that link unless you have watched the complete last season!!!! (gotta make those wrist warmers!)
Anyway. The shoes were in a group of clothes that my friend gave to Azia.. I claimed them.. Along with the clothes my friend brought us a care basket from their church.. They made and gave out I think 3000 and still had some left over~ so they asked the church members if there was anyone they wanted to give them too and they said they would take one for us! It;s a huge box of food, oranges onions, potatoes, flour sugar etc etc.. and a Christmas present for each of the kids! You all might get me believing in Karma yet…

Monday Mish Mosh
Ahh the joy of the season.. untangling the lights.. woo hoo!
We got them untangled and tested on Saturday and went and cut down our tree.. and.. well that’s it!There wasn’t time for anything else!
I got my yarn for my Hexed Hat.. pop over to the knitalong and check out my first hexagon! It was fast and easy, instead of using DPN’s I went with two circulars.
What else.. THIS bothers me. I read last year that just about every woman in Iraq is on Valium.. it seems it is even worse this year than last year. Women are basically becoming prisoners in their own homes for fear of being killed or kidnapped or other awful things. They cannot hold jobs, they cannot drive, they cannot go out without head scarves and long skirts.. many leave home once every two months or so.. I don’t see how this is a better democratic Iraq. I rarely say anything political so.. you have to know this aspect really bothers me..of course this is coming from me.. who hates wearing skirts.. and doesn’t wear a head covering.. but I will do both out of respect for others..
I dunno, sure the rest of us might be safer.. but they aren’t..is this a fair trade off? It sure is tricky.

An angel in Rhinebeck..
While many of us were off at the NY Sheep and Wool Festival, enjoying ourselves, and all the fibery goodness involved, close by there was an angel at work, and we didn’t even know it.
This person I speak of is Angela Cole. When the first reports about Hurricane Katrina started Angela was compelled to help. She registered as an aid worker with appropriate agencies and after waiting for the call, which never came, took it upon herself to get supplies and get down to the hardest hit areas of the Gulf coast.
When she arrived in the area she asked where was it the worst. She was told to try Pearlington MS, and that is where she went..
What she found there was devastation, and an utter lack of help from any government agency that is supposed to be there after such disasters strike.
Over the last year she has adopted this town of Pearlington, going there several times at her own expense, and doing what she can to help. She has done more for this town than any aid agency that is officially tasked with this job. She has gotten media attention to the area, and started The Pearlington Foundation to organize and raise funds to help the families still there to rebuild.
I have been doing what I can to help her in this effort. The going has been tough, at times I feel like David vs Goliath, As people say.. ‘why don’t they just move out of there?’ and start somewhere new? The fact is that if they moved, they would be immediately homeless.. right now the families that are still there at least have a FEMA trailer over their head, occupations that they know, and some friends and family around them. To leave that.. that little plot of land with their name on it.. would be very difficult.
There are also times when I feel completely blessed as people dig deep and give even when it is an extremely difficult time for them. And trust me.. some times even just $5 is a sacrifice.. thank you..
My dream when I started Purls of Hope, and the subsequent fundraising blog Knitters Build a House was to rebuild just one house there in Pearlington.
I want Angela to be an angel of hope this Christmas.. telling these families that yes they are not forgotten, and yes they can rebuild their homes their lives and their hope.
