  • BrianBrian, do I turn here?

Date: 2007.01.17 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 2

Well we had a mini adventure today..Azia had her school spelling bee, and they picked a location that was an hour away in a town I am unfamiliar with. So naturally I went on line popped in the address and got turn by turn directions. They seemed straightforward enough so I didn’t worry.

I got all the kids packed up and we were one our way with an hour and a half to make the trip.

It went fine.. that is until we got to the very last turn. I could not find the road.

I went up Broadway till I decided I had gone too far, and then turned around. I went back down Broadway past the highway the other direction in case the turn left actually should have been a turn right.. it wasn’t. Then I took one more stab at another direction and that.. well that didn’t work out either.

So I pulled into a nice quiet cul de sac and called Brian.

After a little trouble (me giving him the wrong town name) he pinpointed my location on his computer and saw the problem immeadiately. I had missed the turn because the intersection was one of those annoying K shaped interesections. I new the one leg of the K was Columbus road, but had seen no signs that said the upper leg of the K was Center.. the road I wanted.

So he gave me some nice turn by turn directions live, cause I took a few more wrong turns and it all worked out.

Azia got to her spelling bee, ended in the top six, and was knocked out by the word chocolate! AHHH She cannot be MY child!

Anyway. All’s well that ends well, and safe and not out of gas in the middle of nowhere.

Last night was a blast! We had two new members in our knitting group.  I worked on my sock on my little sock loom. Nancy had forgotten her crochet hook so she played with my knitting board, and added a good two inches to my work! It is soo nice being a loom knitter.. people think it is a novel thing and they want to try it.. so you can always get someone to do a little work for you!!

  • Knit or not knit.. that is the question.

Date: 2007.01.15 | Category: Knitting Without Needles | Response: 5

Almost exactly a year ago Leslie vonHolten made a post on the Lawrence.com site about needle knitting vs. loom knitting.(go on you can go read it.. I’ll wait)

Now she basically based her whole diatribe on Knifty Knitters vs. needles and so limited her own scope of the subject at hand. Her basic conclusion is that using a knitting loom is not knitting.. infact she coined her own term ‘knifting’

Here is a definition of knit/knitting that I got from Answers.com which cites the American Heritage Dictionary.

    knit Pronunciation (nt)

    v. knit or knit·ted, knit·ting, knits
    v.tr.

    1. To make (a fabric or garment) by intertwining yarn or thread in a series of connected loops either by hand, with knitting needles, or on a machine.
    2. To form (yarn or thread) into fabric by intertwining.
    3. To join closely; unite securely.
    4. To draw (the brows) together in wrinkles; furrow.
Clearly a knitting loom or board falls into this definition as knitting. It is a simple machine used to make fabric, by intertwining yarn in a series of connected loops. SO I am thinking that we can close the book on this issue.. whether you use your fingers, needles, a loom, board or machine all these items are used to the same end.
    So what do you think?

I know he so doesn’t look happy. Poor thing has been sick the last couple of days. He is doing better today so hopefully this is the end of this little bout of ick!

Got to do some math and get the rest of this little sweater done! It’s going really fast! I am liking that part of it!

Keep leaving those comments.. we are not even close to 300 yet!!

I want to hear from my international readers! I peek in from time to time on the Scalliwags Online page to see who is poking around. And everyday without fail I have a visitor from China around 11a.m. our time.. which is probably late at night their time.. and I see people popping in from Canada, Great Brittian, France..Mexico!!! all over! So come on .. delurk and leave me a comment even if it is just to say hello!

And say hello to my nice new little bit of technology.. it’s just a used laptop but it’s fun to be able to take it anywhere around the house and surf the net!
