Some Egg!

Well a while ago I promised to have Azia and Jaxom guest blog to show off their science projects.. well I have been a bit busy. I have been helping put something together that my loom knitting friends will love.. ahh you have to wait till tommorrow! So Here is Azia’s report!

 Eggciting Science: bouncing eggs!

I found out that if I soaked eggs in vinegar they would bounce so I decided to make my experiment about that!

Problem:If I dropped four eggs that have been soaked in vinegar for different amounts of time from the same heights which egg will bounce the most before breaking?

Hypothesis: The egg that is soaked in the vinegar longest will bounce the most before breaking because it was in the vinegar the longest.

Method: I will soak three eggs in vinegar for  2, 4 and 6 days then I will drop each of the eggs from various heights and see how many times each egg bounces before it breaks.  Result…

Egg

Dropped from    9 inches
Dropped from   36 inches
Dropped from     6 feet
Dropped from     12 feet

2 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage

 4 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
Membrane broke on second drop

6 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
Egg broke on second drop

My experiment was to see if I dropped three eggs that have been soaked in vinegar for different amounts of time from the same heights which egg will bounce the most before breaking? I thought that the egg that was in the vinegar longest would be strongest because it was in the vinegar the longest. I decided this because I thought that the vinegar would make the egg stronger, and so it wouldn’t break when I dropped it.  I placed three hard boiled eggs in glasses filled with vinegar.

The first egg was in the vinegar for 6 days, the second egg was in the vinegar for 4 days and the third egg was in the vinegar for 2 days.  I did some research and found out that the vinegar would make the egg shell dissolve because there is a chemical reaction between the vinegar and the calcium in the egg shell.  After soaking the eggs in the vinegar, I took them out and dropped them from various heights.

My results are in this chart.

Egg
Dropped from    9 inches
Dropped from   36 inches
Dropped from     6 feet
Dropped from     12 feet

 2 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage

  4 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
Membrane broke on second drop

  6 Day Egg
3x no damage
3x no damage
3x no damage
Egg broke on second drop

My hypothesis was wrong because the egg that was soaked in the vinegar for two days never broke; the egg that was in for six days broke at the highest height.  I think it’s because all of the shell did not dissolve on the two day egg and because all of the shell dissolved on the 6 day egg.

Stay tuned for some exciting news tommorrow!! Well if you late owls check in you might catch it before everyone else!

Of Apples and Trees…

The other night we had some excitement. I was upstairs for a bit and Azia was downstairs and she was hungry. So she decided to make a Hot Pocket. Well she read the instructions for the oven cooking…

The house still smells like smoke 4 days later!

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I think next year she won’t have the same request for her birthday dinner as this year. When she was asked what she wanted she replied ‘food that isn’t burnt’. Meanwhile my first attempt at fudge well isn’t..

They all assured me at Loom n’ chat on Friday night that I could always eat my fudge with a spoon. They were right.. it will be some nice chocolate syrup for my ice cream!

Let’s see in knitting news.. I made it on page 7 of the KnitPicks catalog! It’s weird seeing something you knit in a cataloge.

We are home from church again this week. The driveway is an ice rink at a 45 degree angle. I am thinking about getting out my ice skates.

Hopefully Azia will take after my more sucessful attempts like this one too!

Hijacked.. hoodwinked and otherwise missing..

My camera.. Don’t worry I know where it is.. in the baby bag. My husband was most helpful and took our little guy home early from the science fair on Tuesday night.  And took the baby bag with him, with my camera inside..so I am waiting till I remember to get it out so I can show you some pics of the finished back of his sweater, and have some ‘guest bloggers’ write about the science fair. So stay tuned! Hopefully he will come home for lunch and I can grab it!

The Scientific Method

We have been preparing for the school science fair this week. Azia is making bouncing eggs, and Jaxom is working on a little twist on the classic baking soda and vinegar volcano

So there have been scenes like this around the house..

Big Picture Show!

Tonight we are going to go to the premier of Bridge to Terabithia. It is one of Azia’s birthday presents.. she is taking us all.  She even gets to buy us candy and popcorn! So here is my big picture show!

I am all accsessorized and ready to go.. got the pretty earphones and the case.. now all I need is the computer!

My other deadline got squashed so I actually had time to relax and work on Brian’s sweater. Now I didn’t do this all last night but a good part of it I burned through a whole ball of yarn. It is going fast! Well that is till I get to the front and sleeves!

And.. for Isela. She said I should take some more pictures of my surroundings so here you go.. the view I wake up to. There is a sliding glass door in our bedroom and so this is what I see when I wake up!

And last but not least.. does this look like a spoiled kitty or what?

I ate a cookie!!!

ok that might not sound too exciting to you but it sure is to me! You see I have been plagued with unrelenting, constant sublingual pain for the last 5 days. It is starting to get better, much better so I can actually eat without whimpering and curling up in the corner in pain. I was giving it till today and if it wasn’t any better I was going to trek over to the doctor.. but it looks like the worst is over.  It’s funny how pain in your tongue can just bring you down and grind everything to a halt! I couldn’t talk, swallow or chew without absolute severe pain!

Anyway.. we are digging out like many of you out there..

Have fun and go make a snow man! I need to make myself some mittens! I have none!
