[...] How to Measure Your Mystery Yarn! – Today I needed help with my brain. I have this yarn that I think is fingerling weight, it’s 100% Virgin Wool it says and a nice color green. I have four hanks of it and while it came with the tags, it doesn’t say how many yards there are. So I need to figure it out so I could potentially use it. This website was one of the first that popped up and it was just what I needed. A simple answer I could have come up with, but like I said, my brain needed some help. So after doing this I learned that I about about 225 yards or yarn per hank so about 900 yards total! Enough for a shawl! [...]

That is so simple. I guess I had thought about the chair method but needed someone else to tell me that it worked before trying. I have some vintage wool that I got at a thrift store for nothing and want to make a lace shawl. But there is no way I'm starting without knowing how much I have. Thanks so much!

I use a small digital scale. It was about $25 and is meant to be used for determining weight for postage. I measure out five or ten yards of yarn and weigh that. Then I divide to get the weight per yard. Then I weight my ball of yarn and divide by the weight per yard.

This sounds way more complex when I write it, but it has been a lifesaver when I want to know if I have enough yarn to finish a second sock. Also useful for using up those odd balls in my stash.
