As the sun set on this first night of Hanukkah I was starting to prepare dinner. This is the first time in over a week I have felt well enough to even attempt this so it was cool! It’s been a rough couple of days outside of the sickness. When I went to the doctor for my follow up appointment yesterday my bank card was declined! Brian’s card was misplaced so we immediately thought that it was because of that! After a quick check of the account on his phone we were perplexed. We stopped at the bank after the appt. and found out the problem was with MY card and that someone had tried to access it and had pin errors so the bank shut it down. I reset my pin at the bank and then headed home. When I got home a voice mail awaited me. The bank fraud dept. had called. Someone tried to get money out of our bank account from Shanghai!

To top that off, our transmission in our van went. This has left us without a vehicle.. save the motorcycle. And with me being sick I haven’t gotten out to finish some necessary shopping!

I was mulling this all over, and decided to make a favorite dinner. As I got things out I realized I couldn’t find any butter. I searched the refrigerator.. nope.. the freezer.. nope .. the downstairs freezer.. there was margarine.. not really what I needed but it would have to do. Then I needed an onion.. looked in all the normal spots.. nope no onion. So I got the folding step stool out (yep I am short.. ) and got dried diced onions out of the cupboard. They would have to do.

But I found that God just didn’t want me to ‘make do’ this first night of Hanukah. So He went all Jehovah Jireh *on me! After I washed the skillet and had put a little margarine in it I happened to look up (remember I am short) and there.. up on top of the refrigerator was the EXACT amount of butter I needed. I hadn’t seen it there before… weird..

Then I stepped over to the pantry closet to get something and POP.. out falls an onion.. the EXACT size onion I needed. Well.. ok then!

On a day I am struggling to figure out how I am going to get everything done, pay for this car repair and if I am ever going to just get better and feel 100% God is showing me in his own little way that indeed he will provide what I need.

Thanks.. I needed that.

*The Lord will provide.

SO. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you have a little bit of an idea how my week has gone!

While getting ready to head out to our church’s district conference, I have been cleaning. (I hate to come home to a messy house, don’t you?)

In the midst of cleaning I kneeled on the broken axel of a matchbox car. Of course it was rusty too what broken matchbox car axel isn’t rusty? It went in the whole way.. about a half an inch (sorry to gross you out)

My last tetanus shot? 13 years ago!

Off to the doctor! Two Band-Aid’s and one shot later It was all good. Sorry no picture of the offending object. The nurse practitioner tossed it in the sharps box!

Well with the boys at camp for 3 days the house stayed clean for more than 24 hours. So that was good because my knee hurt!!

Fast forward to yesterday. Off we went to pick up the boys at camp, where Brian proceeded to step in the hole dubbed the ‘ankle breaker’ Well you saw the pictures on my wordless Wednesday post.. off to the urgent care and x-rays and new crutches. He is feeling better but this leaves the driving chores to me!

Meanwhile.. back at home… Azia was being AWESOME and staring the boy’s camp laundry. Unfortunately something went wrong and when the washer went to drain it went ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Apparently it was a flood of massive proportions. She and Jaxom took quick action and got the washer stopped, and sopped up the mess. They did great!!

So, I am off to get him to write out some lists of what we need to pack, so I don’t forget anything!

I have a Finished Friday of a little craftiness to show off tomorrow! So look for that!

I was recently contacted BY Andrea . Her mother had given her a challenge to make 21 hats for charity by October. So she started knitting. Loom knitting that is!

She chose the Honeycomb Hat pattern from my site and went to town!

Just she emailed me and let me know that she had already reached the goal of 21 hats! In fact she has recently hit hat # 34. Here it is..

She is wondering how many more she can get done by the October deadline. At this rate who knows?

Well. It seems to me all these hats need some scarves to go with them, or mittens!

So here is my challenge to you: knit a scarf or mittens to donate to be sent with the hats. Send me a comment, and I will be glad to give you the mailing address where you can send the items so that and her mom can add them to the care packages they are sending out.

Come on! If Andrea can knit that many hats.. then hey if each of us sends her a scarf she can match them up and double the gift she is sending!!

I am so finished with this last year!!

What a difference a year can make. Last year it was my 40th birthday and the day was filled with figuring out how to apply for state insurance for the children, while figuring out just how poor we needed to be to get and keep them on it while still being able to pay the mortgage and eat. We also downgraded my phone to the older cheaper one and ended up cutting out cable and many other things later that week.

This year.. I have my better phone back, and the day was spent getting Brian ready for a business trip for his new job that pays significantly more than that one he was so rudely dumped from a year ago. Again I spent some time recently figuring out insurance for the family.. but this time we are paying for it and CAN pay for it. Our freezer is so full of meat I struggle to find room to put anything in there! My cupboards are full to the brim (If the rapture does happen tomorrow anyone left reading this had my permission to come and help themselves.. just please feed the dog and cats K?)

AND the mortgage which did slip over the last year is caught up and actually is at this point one of 3? outstanding debts we have. We have donated our old car to charity and look forward to getting a nice used 4 wheel drive something and paying CASH for it.

I have to tell you. There is nothing that makes you pray more than having 4 children to feed and not a whole lot to do do it with!! And prayer works.. even for you skeptics out there it can serve also as a solace, God is a shoulder to lean on. Sometimes that is all you need, sometimes more.

And yes. I did more than pray. I also learned a lot more frugal skills.. as if I wasn’t doing it already. Couponing has definitely cemented itself into my routine! I love all the save $100 a week lists.. I already was doing them all in spades!!

Some other things that happened over the year.. I got another book written.. but you all knew that already. I got a job, and have now left it.. A great job! I actually enjoyed it even though I was stretched so thin with work homeschooling and writing a book! I met some really nice people and I do think I was able to show them a glimpse of God’s love which brought me through the tough times. I sure hope so.

All in all it has been a difficult year. There is a happy ending, and I look forward to a good year ahead..

I have made it a goal to start blogging again every day! I have several projects that I need to share. Some techniques I have ‘unvented’ that I would like to do videos of, and just generally need to get back on track with my blog! Look for some upgrades changes and improvements!!

So here we go!! I am going for the 365!! wish me luck!

And here is my silly birthday present!! LOVE IT!!

After nearly nine years my carefree days of housewifery are over. No more lying idly about the house barefoot watching my stories whilst eating bon bons.

What is a bon bon anyway?

Tomorrow I am starting a job. I re-enter the exciting world of work in the big city.

Ok.. it’s just Akron. I just hope I don’t get lost on the way to work tomorrow.

I can’t say I am entirely looking forward to this, and I also can’t say I am entirely NOT. There is a bit of nervous, hesitant excitement about getting out there and taking on a new challenge, learning new things and meeting new people.

I am after all a little more social than my eHermit husband.

At the same time there is a deep sadness, as I have never been away from my two youngest children for any regular time barring a trip here or there. I will miss out on their day to day antics. I’ll miss the fights, the cool Lego creations the little interesting musings. I won’t be there to add a little extra female balance to the mix for my daughter. And I won’t be there to guide my oldest son through his first days of high school!

I still can’t believe it!

This whole thing just stinks. I haven’t spoken of it, but the job cut was devastating, and at the same time a relief. Things needed to change but we were hoping it would be on our schedule. It was not. We spent the evening of my 40th birthday cutting me back to my old cell phone and trying to figure out how poor we needed to be to get the kids on Medicaid and still keep a roof over our heads.

It’s a delicate balance…

We’ve done alright. Brian is working hard at getting his consulting business off the ground and so far we haven’t even gotten any unemployment.

Dang.. I was looking forward to getting some of that money back!

But health insurance for a family is expensive when you make too much to qualify, and bills are piling up a little so off to work I go. Meanwhile, my brave, brave husband will take over the child rearing duties and in a week and a half take over the homeschooling as well. All while still working on his consulting. I will be able to cover the mortgage, health insurance and perhaps some incidentals, but he needs to carry the rest. That is one thing I am sort of looking forward to.. a bit of team work to get it all done.

Well, I have to get up early in the morning.

Another thing I am NOT looking forward too..

So I have to post this and get to bed.

Brian just made sure the tank is full so I am assured to have plenty of gas for my first day of work.

Great…

I just happened to have a bit of matching thread and a needle and so I went into action. There was only one problem. He was driving. But hey, he was game so I went to work. Of we went driving down the road, him with his arm up in the air, me stitching away.

I don’t know what the people in the other cars thought but hey, I finished just in time for him to be presentable when he arrived at the ball field!

All’s well that ends well!

So, since becoming unemployed we are on what we fondly call the ‘unemployment diet’ the good news is we have lost weight.. at least those of us who need it, and the ones who don’t have actually gained weight (go Jules!)

The diet includes LOTS of eggs. Hey they are cheap an good for you! On Frugal Fridays I will let you know my two best meal deals of the week. And my best frugal find! So here we go:

Frugal Find of the Week:

Cereal! Here we go I got 4 boxes of Kellogg’s and General Mills cereal for +$2.61 yep they paid me to get them!! Here’s how:

3 of the boxes were $2.50 one was $3.89 I had 2 free product coupons from Kellogg’s from the recent recall, and one $1.00 off and another $.75 off coupon which doubled to $1.50 . I also had a $2.00 off your order coupon as well! Top that off with the fact that Giant Eagle is also offering a bonus $.15 off per gallon (up to 30 gallons) Fuelperks when you buy 4 boxes of the cereal in one trip. Here’s the math:

I love getting paid to shop!

Meal Deals!

Now for the best meal deals of my week:

The tastiest was Grandma’s Mushroom Chicken from the book Family Feasts for $75 a Week by Mary Ostyn.

I spent $6.99 on the chicken $2.00 on the mushrooms, $.75 on the chicken broth and about a buck on other ingredients. Add $1 for the veggies on the side and about $.25 on my mashed potatoes and I get $12 total so for us $2 a piece and was it ever yummy!!

The best per serving deal was my mini pizzas. Got the English muffins free. Used about 1/3 of a jar of spaghetti sauce $1 a can of tomato paste $ .25 and some cheese probably $1.75 worth. That adds up to $3.00 so per person that is $.50 and everyone loved them!

What are your best frugal meals? Let me know and I will try them out!

And don’t forget to use those coupons!! I have a link to one of the online coupon spots I visit the most over on my left sidebar! Check it out I have saved alot of money printing coupons from this site! In fact two of the coupons I used in my cereal deal came from there!

Also stop by my Frugal Finds page regularly I will be adding links to deals I find there on a regular basis!

Well you may have noticed I haven’t been blogging much lately. It’s mainly because I have been crazy busy, and partly because some of it had to wait for one reason and another. So here is the skinny.. details to come later..

We finished up our school year. 3/4 of the kids finished their year’s worth of curriculum and the strangler was expected.

We were treated to a family trip to Disney World courtesy of my birthparents 10 year wedding anniversary! Thanks guys!!

On the trip we encountered two very different bears.

All 13 of us who converged on Disney came down with a nasty stomach flu.

The day after we got back Vacation Bible School started at church.

I missed the first 2 days and other members of the family didn’t even make it. See reason #4.

I cut my finger, and was unable to knit for about a week, so I picked up some sewing.

I had my 40th birthday..

We spent my birthday downgrading me to my old cell phone and figuring out just how poor we needed to be to get the kids on Medicaid because,

We are now adding to the dismal unemployment statistics in Ohio.

While item #10 leaves me shaking in my boots, my husband is optimistic.

I just burnt the pancakes while blogging. Leaving us with the burning question of.. will she ever learn that blogging/tweeting/bloglines/facebook/Im’ing and cooking don’t mix?

I was looking over the opportunities in the local listings for Disney’s Give a Day Get a Day volunteer program and the volunteer job of ‘Invasive Species Controller’ certainly caught my eye.

Had my parents dubbed me Invasive Species Controller, it might have made those endless hours of weed pulling a little more interesting.. Doesn’t it just tug at the imagination? Battling for life and limb with an ‘invasive species’?

One of the things I hope to do this year is get a little gardening going. Of course I think that every year, but hey who knows this might be the year I fight back some evil weeds in my garden area and get it done!

It’s sure worth it. I might not have thought that when I was young, grumbling and mumbling about having to constantly pull weeds, but when I had a taste of those peas right off the vine, or the blueberries.. oooh those blueberries I sure wasn’t complaining!

And the kids cleaned the living room, the school room, washed dishes AND cleaned in their rooms! (Azia even scrubbed the kids bathroom!)

They wore themselves out! So when I realized at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning that they were actually arriving the NEXT day.. well.. er..

oops!

I think I will never ever live this one down.

And when I said to Brian: “This is the biggest bonehead mistake I have ever made, isn’t it?” he replied: “Well you married me!”

Well its been a tough day. This afternoon at our church council meeting our Sr. pastor tendered his resignation. There have been circumstances that have led to this that are going to be difficult to overcome and I am unsure as to whether his main reason in leaving, intended to prevent more trouble, will come to fruition.

The other bad thing about it, is that while Brian and I knew it was coming (we have been living with the news for about a week) most people did not know, and do not know what has led to it, so it is a really big shock.

I did manage to not blurt out what was in my mind and run out of the meeting, which is good. Ill try to resist blurting out lets keep it together people! .. in the near future.. not sure how well that will work..

So hey, if you are the praying sort, send a few up for our church, and us, and especially Brian as I think he is going to be leaned on heavily in this as someone to look too for leadership as we figure out what the next step is.

To top that off.. as if I needed to.. I slid down the bumpy slide at the baseball park and most likely bruised my tailbone. It sure hurts when I sit at certain angles. Guess I wont be doing too much sitting and knitting this week, which is ok, I have all that cleaning that needed to get done during the school year to get done! So standing and cleaning will be just fine to keep from hurting!

Todays book is by someone I consider one of the guardian angels God has brought into my life. If it werent for Lorna Miser suggesting me to the publisher, I would not have gotten my book deal. So thanks Lorna!

It is so natural that Lorna should have written a book about faith and knitting.. it is so very HER! Faith, Hope, Love, Knitting is a book full of reflections on life and faith and knitting as experienced through Lornas eyes. Every pattern comes from a story from Lornas life. I have to say, every story is just so very beautiful. When I opened this book and started reading I simply could not put it down. Touching and poignant many of them left me with tears in my eyes.. a good thing.. and a smile on my face.

Its a keeper!

Saturday was A Knitters Fantasy. It is a local annual event with knitting classes, a fashion show and market.. as well as a swell swap table!

I taught two classes. In the morning I taught learn to knit on looms, and in the afternoon I taught learn to knit on knitting boards.

Well on Thursday I had arranged to meet a few of my knitting peeps at a local strip mall at 7am so I could ride with them. Saturday morning came and I woke up at 7:10!! I quickly found my phone and called them and they said not to worry they would pick me up because I was on the way.. I had 10 minutes to get ready..

Fortunately I had everything packed up and ready to roll. Brian had picked up some nice breakfast buns and some Mountain Dew the night before.. and he even made me some coffee! After switching shirts and shoes twice( I wont tell you what I stepped in..) barely brushing my hair and consulting them with directions twice we were on our way..

After getting slightly lost (nothing we couldnt handle) on the way we arrived! At the registration table.. they couldnt find my one teaching packet! Yikes! They looked through the box twice and then suddenly after just looking the booklet over and figuring out where my classes were, the thing appeared in the box!

I then figured out that my first class was at 9 when I had signed up for 9:30.. oh well. I was a little late. The class went well and at lunch I went to the market.. after all they gave us some funny money as a reward for teaching the classes..

In the market I ran into my old boss and an old co worker who had come out from PA to check this thing out! It was nice to see them! (Hi Toni and Marge!)

I also got myself this:

So in the end though some odd things happened it all turned out well!

I have created a button on my sidebar and hope that some of you will consider supporting her, and donating to this very important cause.

Hi.. My name is Denise and I’m a Twitter addict..

If you don’t know what Twitter is,” is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called “tweets”, to your friends, or “followers.” -quoted from Tweetnet.

I follow a whole lot of people. Mostly knitters, people I know personally, and a smattering of others thrown in. I also follow a few famous people, like Wil Wheaton and Levar Burton (of Star Trek Next Generation), Fran Drescher, MC Hammer, and Demi Moore (known on Twitter as Mrs Kutcher)

I reply to the ‘tweets’ of these famous people and as expected, there is usually no reply.

Last night MC Hammer posted a link to a photo he took from his seats at the Super Bowl. Now I loved the messages he had sent from the Inauguration, and it looked like he had some prime real estate at the Super Bowl.. and so I replied..”Looks like you have some sweet seats! ”

A little while later I got this:

I was floored!! And that is putting it mildly! Can’t touch that!

Edited to add:

Well then.. look at what landed in my Direct Message box on Twitter..

woOt! Love LeVar Burton!! Reading Rainbow, Star Trek and much more! Thanks man for sending me a message and hey, our kids love Reading Rainbow..

I have picked up a few cook books recently and thought I would share a few with you since some of them are sincerely drool worthy!

I openly admit that I am a Yankee through and through! In fact when The Knitting Wannabe holds her annual Sticks and Grits contest I scratch my head and say WHAT ARE GRITS!??? This year I asked her.. yep I’m that ensconced in the northerly ways.. So when I had the chance to get a sneak peek of the bookScreen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern CookI jumped at it. With 248 pages, this is not only a great cook book it is a book full of tales of a southern cook! So you get a boat load of great recipes, and some great stories to read while you wait for your cobbler or cornbread to cook!

Let’s just say that this household is going to see a bit of a cultural cuisine revolution! There are many new to us foods that need to be tried from our southerly neighbors. Who can resist such recipes as Barq’s Root Beer-Glazed Ham? (I meant to try that one on Easter Sunday but it didn’t happen!) or Proper Fried Chicken (that one looks absolutely delicious!) Then there are the tried and true southern dishes that have never seen a plate in this household.. Gumbo Z’Herbs and Tabbouleh and Fried Okra.. If I can find the ingredients you know I will be giving them a try! If you are looking for some new delights in the kitchen you might just want to pick up a copy of this book!

The book is coming out at the end of April but you can always pre-order so it will hit your doorstep ASAP! If I try some of the recipes over the next couple of weeks I will let you know how they turned out!

Yesterday on the way home from her skating lesson, Azia asked me the age old question.. Why do they call Good Friday, Good Friday?

We ended up in a discussion about it concluding that in the end while Good Friday wasn’t such a good day for Jesus that it was a good day for us because of what he had done on that day.

This ‘good’ Friday hasn’t been such a good one for me either. I got the news late last night that Joel Pennington a fellow loom knitter and future contributor to Loom Knitters Circle was in a fatal accident on Monday. He leaves behind his wife Rebekah and their two daughters aged 6 and 9.

Here is what the message from Rebekah said:

Joel was in an awful car accident on Monday March 17th while driving the girls to school. D got herself out of the van which had been hit by an oncoming car and then rolled several times. She told Joel she was going for help, when she then found the nearest person and demanded they call 911 and me at my home which she read off to them. They asked if she was ok and she said yes, but she’s going back to get her sister. She went and help B out of the van. Joel was still conscious and concerned for them to get out and that they were ok. Joel was trapped in the van, and the fire and medic departments extricated him to be rushed to the hospital where I work. I arrived on scene as they were loading(the girls)in an ambulance unsure if Joel was alive at all. I went with the girls to seek treatment. Only by nothing short of a miracle(the girls)are alive. Joel arrived at the ER a while later and I quickly rushed to see what his status was. He was severely injured, but talking and asking about the girls and me. I went right in and talked to him. I knew they were going to have to put him out to evaluate his situation. We learned that his pelvis was crushed, shoulder dislocated, arms/wrist breaks, pneumo thorax and more…. He was bleeding internally. I talked with our general surgeon and he decided to operate. I spoke with Joel again and we had a few minutes of words. He was taken back to surgery to discover his spleen was torn in multiple locations and they removed it. They stopped as much of the bleeding as they could and prepped him to be air lifted to Billings MT for further treatment. As he arrived in Billings he went into cardiac arrest. They were able to revive him, but he had gone without oxygen for a concerning amount of time. He was not stable enough to endure further surgery at that time. They did everything they could, but he went into cardiac arrest again at about 11 pm and was not able to be resuscitated. I was right there all the while held out hope, but sadly God was ready to call him home.
This has been a very trying week and our lives will be much different now. I’m so thankful that God held our two precious girls…one in each hand. Unfortunately he couldn’t let go of Joel. I knew right off from the state trooper that the other car was in Joel’s lane by a good five feet, but didn’t know why. Today we found out that the 44 year old woman driving the other car was text messaging while driving. She died on impact, her two children and one of their friends were in that car. Her kids were hospitalized, the friend was treated and released. I’m thankful that I had a few minutes to talk with Joel and consider that to be nothing less than a miracle, because after seeing the van at the tow lot today I am amazed he wasn’t also killed instantly. We had Joel cremated and we are having a memorial service on Tuesday March 25 at 10 am at the First United Methodist Church in Powell WY.
The girls are doing remarkably well. B didn’t walk for a couple days because she was pretty bruised and sore. She is moving around much better now. D has some visible bruises and her breastbone is sore at times.
I want to tell everyone how thankful I am for the outpouring of support and prayers. We have amazing family, friends and live in a community second to none in terms of outreach. I apologize for not being able to talk to all of you personally yet, but I’m quite overwhelmed with grief, caring for the girls, investigation into the wreck, arrangements for Joel and the memorial.
I also know that this news hasn’t been able to get to everyone that I would like to tell and talk to, so should you like to pass it on that is fine.
I ask for continued prayers for the girls, myself, the others injured in the accident and their families.

I didn’t ‘know’ Joel for too long.. but what I know is this.. he loved his family, he was passionate about his craft and I am confidant that though I did not meet him in person in this life.. that I will in the next.

Love to Rebekah and the girls! God will give you the strength to overcome this.

……and Drive now.. Text later.. please!

Love to Rebekah and the girls! God will give you the strength to overcome this.

……and Drive now.. Text later.. please!

There once was a knitter who made some felted slippers designed by Cat Bordhi with some Southwest Trading Company Karaoke yarn…

And she was happy!

Then one got a hole it it and she was sad.

Then one cold March day her husband went on a business trip to nice warm Texas, and the next morning when she woke up it started to snow..

And snow..

and snow, until the snow was almost up to her knees!

So the knitter, not having any tall boots of her own (except those sexy ones with stiletto heels) went to borrow her son’s boots so she could start shoveling the driveway, so she could possibly have the job done by the time her husband needed to be picked up from the airport (4 days later..)

But one of her son’s boots was missing its liner! “Grr, Argh” and “Shoot!”, said the knitter! “What will I do?!” “My poor foot will freeze in this boot!”

Then she thought and thought.. and she remembered the nice felted slipper she had made and she went and fetched it. It was just right!

And so the knitter went off and did some shoveling..

Will she get the shoveling done in time to get her husband from the airport, in for days time at noon??? Time will tell.. we shall see…pretty soon!
