Recently one of my favorite designers, Natalie Chanin, had a garage sale on her website. I have sewn a few pieces before, based on her designs, and have even done a simple skirt from one of her DIY kits and enjoyed them thoroughly!

Well, the garage sale was mostly for finished pieces, and I even popped on in the cart one day, but didn’t get it. Then after the second day, I realized that there were also DIY kits and materials for sale! So I snagged a t-shirt kit!

Happy happy joy joy! (and quite a bargain too!)

If you have never gotten mail from the Alabama Chanin company, well just the package is a treat! The boxes and envelopes are all stenciled!! And you feel as if you are opening a present!

So there was the kit waiting to be sewn up and cut up!!

My design choices:

Reverse applique, backstitch around the stenciling, knots on the outside.

I did knots on the outside as a sort of homage to Brian’s Grandmother. She was always going after us for little stray threads on our clothes. It was if she had a sort of sixth sense for them! No straggling stray would escape her sight, out would come the scissors and off with it!

So having the knots on the outside.. well that would just drive her crazy now wouldn’t it.. No.. I really liked her!!! I just like to have a spot of fun with people!!

So on to the sewing..

First pin the backing material behind the stencil part!

Then, backstitch around all the flower shapes..

And cut out the centers to reveal the backing fabric.

It took me about two nights to do the main shapes, and another two to do all the fiddly bits, and cutting and securing the backing fabric.

Then a little practice on the stitch I wanted to use on the neckline..

Cut out the old crew neck and pin in the fabric cut from the bottom edge of the shirt in it’s place!

And then finally once that is all done, time to sew in the label!

And…. voila! She is finished!

I will have to share some photos, of my other pieces.. the ones I have sewn, and my rescues off Ebay! Some how most of them have been in the same color scheme, so it’s nice I can mix and match a bit now!

I had a request a while back for how to make log cabin squared on a loom. I thing I will get that going.. but as you will see from tomorrow’s post I have a little something to get cleared off my ‘plate’ first!

So, how many of you wish you had a place to do your creative stuff? Ooh I see a lot of hands up out there!

I am right with you!

With 4 kids two cats and a largish dog, I struggle just to walk through a room let alone carve out a space for myself to ‘create’.

The hubs has his own office space, and we shared it for a while; that was until my oldest moved his desk in there so he could do his high school work. Now it is a bit of a ‘man cave’ and there is no space for me to spread out and work.

We have a 3 season room and I have generally had that space a bit.. it is mainly used as a play room for the little guys. And we also have this unique space it’s a long storage room about 10(ish) feet wide by 5 feet high by bazillion feet long. (the full length of the house) the one furnace is in there and it’s not a bad space, but you can imagine it is quite like a REAL cave! Our thought was to turn that space into a play area for the boys and that would leave the porch room for me right?

So here’s my question. I wonder how do I claim that space for myself? Setting rules.. etc. and How do I do it without feeling guilty or even selfish! (Us moms are good at that eh?)

How do you do it?

I have gotten a few good ones lately and I thought why not share how I did it! It’s really pretty easy! I use Swagbucks. It’s a great little deal!

I downloaded their search bar and rather than searching through my regular search bar on my internet browser I use the Swagbucks one. I am randomly awarded points for this. Once I have collected up 450 points I pop over to the Swagbucks store and buy myself a $5 Amazon gift card. Quite often you can get used books there for a very low price. I might have to wait a bit till I collect up enough points to get a book and the shipping for free but hey it’s usually worth the wait!

I mention this now because a) I just ordered another $5 Amazon card today so I am on my way to getting a book I have been wanting, and b) There are two great incentives to sign up before Thursday!

Swagbucks is offering a 50 point sign up bonus, so you automatically get 70 points to start you off. AND they are going to be putting out 5 bonus codes on Thursday! So if you sign up and download the search bar a little message alert will go off on it to tell you there is a code and you can get some points fast!! Or you can watch the little widget on my left sidebar, it will also show code alerts!

There are also alot of other things you can get with Swagbucks.. Restaurant.com certificates, and music posters etc. You can also use your Swagbucks to enter to win prizes or you can save up for something really big like an iPad!. I don’t know if I have the stamina!

Click here to check it out and sign up! It’s free, and it’s really not annoying like other online programs or I wouldn’t be telling you about it let alone using it!

Note.. apparently there is a special code to enter to get 30 extra points when you sign up. SwagToSchool is the code, it is case sensitive as all Swagbucks codes are! Let me know if it works!

Enjoy! And let me know what ya get with your points!!

It’s been a while since I have done a How To’s Day and so let’s get back into it! In a week and a half I will be going out to Texas to attend my brother’s graduation. We will have a little free time while we are there so I figured that we could do a little yarn crawl.. so I set about searching for what was in the area.

It was slow going till I found a terrific website called Knitmap! It’s like Google maps but specifically for finding yarn and craft related places!

Simply enter in the city and state that you are going to and if you have other specifications.. like if you want stores with wi fi, or spinning supplies etc, and off you go!

It will bring up a map with the locations pinpointed, and when you click on them it will show you a summary of details about the shop! Like this:

You can even access it on your iPhone or iPod Touch if you have one! Just enter www.knitmap.com/iphone and you will be there!

For those of you who are not the electronically inclined.. there is a yarn shop guide printed annually. The Fiber Mania,2009-2010, a Travel Guide for People Who Do Things with String is a guide of shops and guilds all related to the fiber arts across the country! Since it is updated annually so it should have pretty much the most recent info. In a compact size you can throw it in your car, or suitcase and off you go!

With summer vacations coming up planning some yarn shop time while you travel isn’t such a bad idea.. is it. you know in case of emergency and all…

A little mitered square heart sachet. A simple one. Some of them decided they were going to use it to make a pin cushion!

Now.. it’s written for knitting on needles. However it can be done on a knitting loom easily. Go and look over my Making mitered squares on a knitting loom tutorial. Then simply use a small gauge, or extra small gauge loom, a mini wonder loom, or adjustable loom works best for this; then follow the pattern!

Enjoy!

Here is the link to download the pattern! mitered-square-heart-sachet

Connie.. you can come on over and put in a pattern at Loom Knitters Circle any day! Woosh this one blows me away! BEA-U-TI-FUL!

There was a tie for second place:

Kitty Afghan by Annette Roa

This one is so super cute! I could see it as a nice stash buster too, a different color for each cat!!! Lovely!!

Stripes Afghan by Ella Roby

I love the striping design on this, it reminds me of a Native American blanket. Very very nice!

The awesome thing about these is since they are double knit on the knitting board they will look just as good on the back as they do on the front! That is so nice!!!

I have linked to the PDF patterns of these afghans so you can go see how to make them! So just click on the name of the pattern and it will take you there!

Next week some fancy slip stitching designs!

There has been a lot of talk about modular knitting and mitered squares on the KWON forums this last week. It made me realize that I had neglected to post my Mitered Square Tutorial here! It was first published in the Summer Issue of Loom Knitters Circle this year and I hope you all enjoy it!

How to Make Mitered Squares on a Knitting Loom!

I have had some fun with the mitered squares.. most notably my star travel pillow!

It is made on the Mini Wonderloom in extra small gauge from Décor Accents, which turns out to be just right for making mitered squares.

(The kids have played a little rough with it and it sprung a hole! I need to reseam it!!)

The new Loom Clips from Provo Craft are really excellent as well, as you only have to move the clip, slip the center stitches over them and keep working. No shifting of stitches involved!

So enjoy and as always if you have any questions… let me know!

Our Internet has been down today, and no pleading or harassing of our Internet provider would get it back in operation! At least they said not until tomorrow morning. (aka Wednesday) But it seems it worked out and we are back online! (but if you emailed me today, please send it again because those did not seem to make it through the outage!)

While the Internet was out, we were a bit.. er.. without something to do. So we made some knitting looms with things around the house!

I’ll tell you about two styles that we made.

First up is the simple easy peasy loom.

Here is what you need:

a cardboard tube i.e. a toilet paper or paper towel roll

4-6 popsicle or craft sticks (guess what we had for snack today!)

a ponytail holder, or rubber band

tape of some sort the best would be masking tape or duct tape

Using the ponytail holder or rubber band, band the sticks to the outside of the tube like this:

2. Make sure the sticks are distributed evenly around the tube, with the sticks extending about 3/4 to 1 inch above the top of the tube.

3. Tape them in place with your tape.

4. KNIT!

The second style is a little more complex, but a great way to recycle those plastic juice, and drink mix containers!

Here is what you will need:

a plastic juice or plastic drink mix container

ruler and/or tape measure

scissors

permanent marker

paper

So here is what you do with all of that!

1. Measure your container at the point you expect to cut, you want a container with an even measurement, like 20 inches no fractions like 17 1/2!

2. CAREFULLY cut around your container. (usually there are lines on these you can use as a guide!)

3. Make a template on your paper for how you want to cut the pegs into the edge of your container. I used a half inch wide and a half inch deep, I think 3/4 inch deep might be better. line your template up with the top edge of the container, and trace the peg cut lines with your permanent marker.

4. CAREFULLY cut your pegs out, cut the sides first then the bottom line. You might want to cut a slit in the bottom to hold your yarn while you are working (see photo below)

5. KNIT!

By far the Kool Aid drink mix container was the best.

I think the paper tube ones would make a great make and take for a fiber show or craft show, or even for a scouting or church group. It’s so easy!

*** and if you don’t know what to do with the loom once you make it.. check out my loom knitting basics tutorial on my tutorial page!! And any of the loom knitting sites in my links will have some great resources as well!*****

I am hoping to submit a tutorial to Whip Up for a foldable portable knitting loom, so look for that there some time in September!! (crossing my fingers!)

Well Brian is cooking dinner tonight so I am off to finish another peice of the project for Shepherd.. really they are not naming him that.. it was a little joke.. that stuck! Hang on Jesse I am almost done!

Thank you to all of you who made suggestions!! Keep them coming!

Today’s subject was recommended by Karen. This is actually a question I get alot!

“I want to make this certain pattern, but I need to use a different yarn because __________! “ Fill in the blank ….

I’m allergic to the yarn called for..

I can’t find the yarn called for..

It’s just tooo expensive.

So what do you do when you want to switch out a yarn? How do you find a suitable substitute?

Allow me to let you in on one of my (until now) best kept secrets: YARNDEX.COM

I have acquired lots of little odd balls of yarn lately. This leaves me with a little dilemma. Just how much yardage is it that I have here! As a designer it is important to let potential users of my patterns know just how much yarn they will need to knit up a pattern! As a knitter it is important to know how much yarn you have so that you are confidant that you will not run out before your project is done!

You might not have a whack of odd balls like I do; but let’s face it, we all have yarn in our stash that has been separated from it’s label or even some ‘vintage’ mystery yarn that we picked up here and there. So just how do you determine how much yarn you have there?

It can be easy and low tech or you can get fancy..

In your LYS or online yarn shops there are often advertised little yarn measuring devices like this:

These are nice and vary in price from about $40.00 to $70.00. You grab it, clamp it to your work table and run the yarn through it typically between your skein winder and ball winder and go go go. It’s quick, easy and pretty darn accurate.

You really need to use a ball winder at least with this gadget for it to work really properly.

Of course if you are concerned about the price of the ‘commercial’ models you can always opt for your own low cost version. The ‘yarn meters’ are typically fishing line meters that are available at your local sporting goods store, that are mounted on a wooden yarn guide and clamp set up. I asked my husband to see if they were available one day at our local sporting goods store and rather than just scouting, he came home with one! So for about $15 I had my yarn meter! (and it even lights up!) I just clamp it on an unsuspecting chair placed between my swift or skein of yarn, and my ball winder and measure away!

Now, if you don’t like all that fancy winding, and spinning and all there are some other options for you.

The wrap method..

This has been the method I have typically used to measure any mystery yarn in my stash. I usually grab one of my kitchen chairs and turn it upside down. I measure around the legs, make a note of the measurement and start winding! Or I just wind it around the back of the chair.. works just as well..

I count how many times that I wind the yarn around and then do a little math magic to figure out how much yardage I have. In my case, the measurement around my chair top is 31″, so at 75 wraps around it, I have 2,325″ of yarn. If I divide that by 36 (you know 36 inches in a yard..) I get approximately 64.5 yards!

You can also do this with a piece of cardboard. Easy Peasey and better yet! FREE!

The Niddy Noddy:

I will admit to having bought one of these.. this is typically a tool spinners use, and while I have temporarily given up spinning till I get a wheel that is more suited to me, I will keep the niddy noddy. I have however yet to use it!

Knitter’s Review did a little piece on using niddy noddies to measure yarn.

And here is a nice piece on the general use of a niddy noddy.

So if you have one and haven’t used it hey, there you go!

There are some interesting mathematical methods for figuring your yarn by weight and all but hey I like to do as little math as possible!! So pfft!

I hope that you have found a method here to use for measuring your mystery yarn!

Till next How To’s Day, keep on playing with that fiber!! And if you have any questions you want me to cover, let me know! Just leave me a comment!

Today we cover the “somewhere in between” ear flap method. Some of you may remember my little green hat. It has earflaps that can be pulled up and tied at the top when they are not needed, with a little trick, they tuck up nice and neat behind the fold up brim of the hat. Never fear my fellow loom knitters, today you get your own nifty tuck-up-able earflap hats!

It’s quite easy!

First make your 3 stitch I cord.

Then increase this to however wide you want your earflap (in my case I only made it 5 stitches wide as I am working on a 24 peg loom)

Now since you will be seeing both sides of this earflap I recommend you make it in garter stitch pattern.

Once you have your earflap looking the way you want it cut your yarn leaving a nice tail to weave in, and place it on a stitch holder or some waste yarn. And of course you will want to make another one.. unless you only have one ear.

Then cast on all stitches of the loom and work in circular. This will be a fold up brim, you can make it anyway you want, k2p2 ribbing, plain old stockinet, garter stitch, seed stitch you choose! (I chose garter) Knit until you have the length desired for the brim. then.. no mater what stitch pattern you were using you will knit 1 row (I don’t care from flat stitch or e-wrap you choose!)

Here is where it gets tricky.. yep that 4 letter word MATH!!

T= total number of stitches (in my case 24)

E= total number of stitches in BOTH earflaps. (in my case 10)

So here is the fancy formula: T – E = X Take X and divide it by 2. this will = S S is the magic number!

In my case 24-10= 14 14/2 =7

I will need to leave 7 stitches between my earflaps so that they are spaced directly across from each other on the loom, and therefore on the head!

You may need to fudge it and have them 1 peg closer to each other in some cases.

So on the next row I will knit S amount of stitches Then you will bind off the number of stitches to match how wide one earflap is. Then knit S amount of stitches again and then again bind off the number of stitches for one earflap.

You should end on the first stitch of the next row. And it will look like this:

Take the earflaps and put the end of the I-cord down through the center of the loom. Place the live loops for each earflap on the corresponding empty pegs on either side of the loom, like so:

Then continue on incorporating those stitches into the next round. Continue with your hat as normal using whatever stitch you choose and finish it off!

Clever!

Enjoy! And next time remind me not to write tutorials late at night

Sleep well, I’ll most likely edit it in the morning….

Let’s face it! It is still chilly outside! And when it is cold it’s important to stick a hat on your head and keep your ears warm!! What better way to keep your ears warm than some clever ear flaps on your hat!

*

Now how to do it. As I thought about that I figured there was more than one way to get the job done. So we will look at three ways to do it! And these principles can translate to needles too , though I will be sticking to my roots and showing these techniques on the knitting looms. I will be covering these it separate posts as it seems that to get this all together at once is impossible especially when I keep thinking of different better ways to do this!! I will pop them all together in a pdf when the series is done!

Starting with the earflaps and working your way up.

Starting at the top and making the earflaps last.

Somewhere in between!

To start with the earflaps and work your way up.. you can make an I-cord to tie your hat on (or not) I usually work a 3 stitch I-cord. Once you have your I-cord made you start to work as for a flat piece and increase 2 stitches at each end of the row every other row till you have the ear flap as wide as you want.

Then keep knitting till you get it as long as you want. Now, break yarn, look across your loom and start again with the center stitch directly across from the center of your finished earflap.

Then once you are done with your earflaps you simply work your way around your loom and make your hat, your usual way!

In this sample I used a garter stitch earflaps and brim. It is best to use this sort of brim or even a ribbed brim so that that edges between the earflaps will not curl!

Some things to keep in mind:

if you make your earflaps in stockinet stitch the edges will curl. so if you don’t want this to happen work your earflaps in garter stitch!

It seems to me that baby ears are set more toward the front, so you might want to place them closer to the front.

Older ears seem to sit in the middle so center the earflaps for older than baby ears.

If you are making your earflaps a different color than the rest of your hat be sure to match the type of yarn.. you sure wouldn’t want to go and wash your hat in the washer and have your ear flaps felt on you!!

* of course this is THE most clever earflap hat ever.. Jayne Cobb’s hat from Firefly!

I might use the earflap up method for this one.. dispensing with the i-cords and making the earflaps on the wider side..

Try to turn around in her driveway on a very snowy day…

Get stuck.

Pull in further into the driveway and attempt to back out by going fast.

Get stucker. (is that a word?)

Pull forward again, banging her son’s basketball hoop with the ladder rack on your van.

Back up really fast because she has stepped outside to see what is going on and nearly hit her tree and wall.

When offered a snow shovel, DO work fast..

And it can’t hurt to do a little extra <strike>groveling </strike>shoveling to clear a bit more than needed to get out, then beat it out of there fast!

I can’t help but feel sorry for this guy. But it was rather an entertaining scene while we sat for lunch. AND our driveway, was just freshly cleared. Had he just gone a few more yards down the road he would have saved himself a load of trouble!

A real how to in a bit!! I am still working on the samples, and Brian just took off to live blog at the debate tonight. So who knows you might see him on the news if you watch it!

Later gaters!

She has it up at her site Loomy Daze. You can see it here:

Go ahead and watch it.. I’ll wait, I want to expand on her video just a bit as to when you would want to use those methods from a design point of view, a little added value if you will..

First off what are these abbreviations?

k2tog=knit two together

YO= yarn over

SSK= slip slip knit

When you would want to use a k2tog, YO.

This method is used mainly in lace when you want to make a ‘hole’ in your knitting on purpose. The k2tog, decreases normally but when you add the YO after it, you come out with the same number of stitches that you started with. So the width of your piece is kept even. So you could do eyelets like this:

The other point of a k2tog, is that it makes a right leaning decrease. As you see in Stephanie’s video the stitch you are moving to do this decrease will move from the left to the right, so it will lean to the right. This is not as important when doing lace, but comes into play when you are shaping garments.

Say you are making a sleeve cap, you will want the decreasing stitched on the sides of the sleeve cap to lean in toward the middle. this generally gives a neater cleaner look to the garment. so you will use a k2tog on the left edge of the sleeve when decreasing so it will lean in to the right which is toward the center!

The SSK, is the k2tog mirror image. As you see in the video you move the stitch on the right one peg to the left to accomplish this decrease. If you were working on that sleeve cap again, you would put this style of decrease on the right edge of the sleeve, so that the stitches on that edge are leaning to the left, again toward the center of your piece!

These methods are universal, you can apply this to the knitting board, and the needles! I hope this gives you a little food for thought as you work on your next looming project!

Again! Stephanie put together an excellent video, it is a great resource! There are some days I feel like I am in a DAZE.. ok let’s face it that is every day! I sure wish I had the time to do these types of video tutorials.. someday! But for now I will be content to refer you to the talent that is out there!

Well I was asked by Kathy Z. how to make yo-yo’s on the knitting loom so here goes.. it’s easy!

For my example I used a blue Knifty Knitter loom and I used a worsted weight wool yarn.

Cast on all stitches and started working in the round. You can do the twisted knit stitch (aka, e-wrap) or the flat stitch if you like. In my example I did 12 rows.

Take the tail at the cast on end and string it through the stitches on the cast on edge and pull it to gather.

It should look something like this:

The next row, purl the entire row. This will be the outer edge of the Yo-Yo

Knit an equal amount of rows as you did before the purl row, in the example, 12 rows.

Bind off using the gather bind off method.

Secure the ends and then poke your yarn end through the center to the other side.

It might look something like this. Go grab your pins!!

Give it a little wash.. pin it out and let it dry! Check it out.. you can turn it into a square…

If your #of stitches is divisible by 4..or an octagon if they are divisible by 8!

Just make a bunch, seam them together along those edges and make a blanket, placemat.. or whatever you can dream up!

Use them alone, they make a great coaster!!! Just be sure to use natural fibers like wool, or cotton because if you put it under a hot cuppa cuppa you don’t want your creation to melt!

Gotta have my eggnog!

Here are some more ideas of how to join those little yo-yos and what to make with them!

Some tips and recommendations:

I do recommend use of wool or cotton etc.. as you can block these and mold them to the shape you want more easily than an acrylic yarn.

you will want to play around with the number of rows used to make the yo yo, especially if you are using a different size loom, or different weight yarn. The rule of thumb seems to be that you knit about half of the amount of rows as there are pegs on the loom. That gives a good place to start.

HAVE FUN! It’s only yarn! You can unravel it, and try again till you get the results you are looking for.

Don’t forget to send me some pictures of your creations!!

In fact I think the steeking was the easy part! So here are some suggestions for you to steek fearlessly. This is a great technique for loom knitters too by the way!

Read everything you can on the subject!

Gather your supplies…

You might need some of these… if you are really faint of heart!

Then make the cut!

Really it’s not as scary as it seems! Make a mini sweater and try it out! Practice makes perfect!
