Well my finished Friday post didn’t pan out. So now I have a bonus finished project for you!

First up, my Rustic Autumn Shawl:

Well.. mine is not so autumn-y it is more summery with the rainbow yarn!

The details: This is a needle knit, the pattern can be found here: Click here

Yarn: Kauni Strikkfasthed 8/2

Colorway EQ

Bought at The Clay Purl in Nashville IN

Knit up on my Addi Turbos!!

I used exactly one ball of yarn, and had about 24” left over!! YES!! NO LEFTOVERS!

This was an easy knit, anyone who is a beginner with shawls should try this one out!

Love the pattern!! It was a fun knit!

Next up: Elisabeth’s Cowl from Wendy Knits Lace

This is one of the introductory patterns in Wendy’s new book. An easy lace knit, even I didn’t make any mistakes on it!! Which is impressive!!

I have it pinned up on a piece of cardboard to block right now, I need to get some ‘action’ shots of these!

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease. (not sure of the color it is variegated browns very pretty)

The pattern can be found in the book Wendy Knits Lace

This is also a needle knit, I am happy to say that this lace pattern is an easy one to do on a knitting loom! No translation needed other than for a K2Tog, move your stitch to the right and for a SSK, move your stitch to the left!

And of course you want to keep your stitches LOOSE when working lace on a loom!

I have leftovers. Grr. It tool less yarn than the pattern called for.

I would definitely knit this one again it’s a nice easy fast knit. I made it in two evenings!

I will give it a try sometime soon on the loom!

I am playing with some small projects on a new loom, I will give you all some more information when I get a thumbs up from the loom maker!! So look for that soon!

First up: Lady Lovelace

It is no secret that Teva Durham is one of my favourite knitting designers. I love her creative bent on design! And so when I saw one of her patterns in Knitty I HAD to knit it! And so I did. Now I have only done the cardigan, I do have the yarn for the Shawl portion as well and plan to knit that up before winter.

The yarn is Teva’s as well, it is Which is so soft that it is even good for against the skin wear. I am not sure if it is produced any more. it was a bit difficult to find a retailer selling it so could get more to knit up the shawl. Here is a little detail of the sleeve:

Today also marks the end of our official school year. This is the first time I have not gotten everyone done with their progress, but working full time for most of the school year sort of puts a dent in your productivity.

Jaxom will finish his first year of high school today, Azia has a bit of work to finish Caleb is doing fine and Julian will be sliding solidly into the 3rd grade level of all classes. So the little guys will be at the same level next year. I plan to spend some time this summer seeing what is holding my little Julian back in reading and seeing what we can do about it.

So, I the not-a-sock-knitter am planning to start a pair of socks just for knitting while in lines at Disney. I love knitting socks in line, it just looks so cool and people are always intrigued. Also they are a nice small project that is portable.

When today’s book was offered to me I thought ok, I’ll take a look.. well.. I did and I am in LOVE!!!! The Sock Knitter’s Workshop by Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden is terrific! It’s like a buffet of techniques that you can mix and match to make socks!!!

Anyone who knows me as a knitter, knows I love interesting construction in knitting. So this book is right up my ally! There are like 13 different heels, 7 different toes, 5 cast on methods, toe up cuff down if it is a sock knitting technique that has been invented… it’s in here!

Of course there are also some really nice patterns..

Like this…

   and this….

and this..

oooh those are crazy fun looking..

So many sock options so little time. hehe or well in my case I might have time in those lines!!

NEW SOCK BOOKS!

Boy was I excited when I got home Monday after a LONG day.. to find three packages with 4 books in them on my doorstep! So with this and all the other new books I have picked up lately look forward to plenty of great Bookish Thursdays to come!

Let’s get started! Like the title says there are new sock books on the ranch! First up is a new volume by Wendy Johnson of the delightful Wendy Knits blog.

If you have knit through every sock pattern in Wendy’s first book Socks from the Toe Up: Essential Techniques and Patterns from Wendy Knits, and are ready for more then Toe-Up Socks for Every Body: Adventurous Lace, Cables, and Colorwork from Wendy Knits is for you! Yeah.. you know who you are.. don’t make me point you out.. and no, I don’t mean Wendy.. though knitting for work is a great excuse.. (no dear I can’t cook tonight I have to get these socks done for the book!) Anyway.. I digress..

Toe-Up Socks for Every Body is chock full of sock patterns.. 21 to be exact, and as the title indicates they are socks for all people.. little to big, young to old, funky to traditional. While heavy on patterns, this book is light on instruction. Wendy leaves that up to her first book which is chock full of sock knitting instruction, tips and wisdom. This makes the book a great companion volume to the first.

The two books together make a perfect set, and would make a great gift for a sock knitter or a knitter looking for some great portable projects!!

For my loom knitting friends.. with all the amazing and versatile sock looms that Decor Accents has out now I don’t see how you could go wrong with this book! If you have knit through all the patterns in the Loom Knitting Socks book you might want to give this book a look!

The weather is heating up. Well, at least it sure was hot in Texas.. And so its a good time of year to start thinking about small projects that are portable and small for summer knitting!

Traditionally this means socks. They are great for travel, knitting small and portable, but not everyone is into socks! (I am a case in point!) For some a shawl is the favourite travel knitting project, but lets face it they do get big, and they are usually made of wool, so they get hot as well!

So what to do?

Perhaps these books can give you some ideas!

First up is One Ball Knits Purses by Fatema, Khadija and Hajera Habibur-Rahman.

I am very excited about this book because I have quite the collection of bag handles hanging about! Each one of them a different style, and some antique. This book has a bag for EVERY ONE of them!

With the one skein approach I can also clear out those odd balls of yarn I have languishing in my stash!

Then there are the bags that I just want to knit so I HAVE to get the handles! Like this one:

All in all this book is full of fast, easy, fun projects that are sure to appeal to all. I know I will be making at least 3 of these this summer! Join me?

Next up is The Best-Dressed Knitted Bear by Emma King. This book is full of adorable bears and cute little outfits for them to wear!

The book is categorized into three groups: simple, intermediate, and complex; each with two sizes of bear: small and large. This means there is a bear in there for any level of knitter!

The outfits are absolutely adorable! From pirates to graduates, princesses and fairies, there is sure to be a bear there for someone you love to knit for!

Not only are these bears great small projects for summer, but they would make great charity knits as well!

The last book of the day is Knitted Babes by Clare Garland. I have been meaning to get this book for a while and I am glad I did! The characters that fill this book are adorable and fun! And it also give you a chance to do a little sewing to make their outfits! Mix and match and have a good time creating looks for them! What more could a girl want?

The other will have to wait a bit. I have to grab a size 4 needle at the shop tonight and get going on the shawl! Summer concert season is upon us and my Mother needs warm shoulders!

Thats ok. I wont need wool socks for a while anyway!

It is so natural that Lorna should have written a book about faith and knitting.. it is so very HER! Faith, Hope, Love, Knitting is a book full of reflections on life and faith and knitting as experienced through Lornas eyes. Every pattern comes from a story from Lornas life. I have to say, every story is just so very beautiful. When I opened this book and started reading I simply could not put it down. Touching and poignant many of them left me with tears in my eyes.. a good thing.. and a smile on my face.

Its a keeper!

Yarn: Loop d’ Loop Moss, in color Brown. 9 balls used.

Needles: Size 7 various used.. Addi circs, and bamboo DPN’s

Got the yarn at Miss Chickpea’s Funky Fibers in Hudson Ohio

(Most of it was the free yarn I won in the hat contest)

I followed the pattern to the T with the only exception being the length of the sleeves, being that I have short arms and all.

Great pattern. Easy to follow, well written. This is going to be a great daily wear sweater, I just hope the yarn doesn’t pill..however I fear it will a bit as it is soft soft soft!

I have one ball of the yarn left over.. if you want it let me know! Again it is Loop d’ Loop Moss color 02 dye lot 6373 enough there to make a nice baby hat or a pair of fingerless gloves or something… this stuff seems to go really far!!

I love today’s book, for a very specific reason: It teaches you something! Yep.. and darn it all, it involves MATH! Yikes.. yep who knew I would like a book that teaches math! Hey as a former teacher, home schooling mom, and sometimes knitting instructor yes this book appeals to me for that reason!

Knits for Bears to Wear: More than 20 Fun, Knit-to-Fit Fashions for All Teddies and Toys Including 18-Inch Dolls by Amy O’Neill Houck, is a great little book! For anyone with a teddy bear collection, or with 18 inch dolls this book is a great find. Or, if you are like me and have a little guy who has a favourite stuffed dog who could use a sweater, this book is for you!

Like I said above this book teaches you something. Each pattern is customized for the size of your stuffed friend or doll by you! Yes. You! Amy provides a little “customizing sidebar’ for each of the projects. You knit up a swatch, pop in the measurements of your toy, and the gauge of your swatch and off you go to a custom fit item for your toy! So rather than blindly following a pattern you learn a bit about customizing! Done in a small way, you can then apply these nice skills to bigger projects down the road! Nothing wrong with that!

Over all the designs are adorable, so if you do choose to simply follow the patterns as written you can’t go wrong.

I might just get ambitious and try to make a matching hoodie for my little guy and his little stuffed doggie. We shall see.. I have a few projects in the works so it’ll have to wait till at least May..

And coming soon (out May 5th) is also The Best-Dressed Knitted Bear: Dozens of Patterns for Teddy Bears, Bear Costumes, and Accessories by Emma King, It looks good too, I’ll let ya know!

A little mitered square heart sachet. A simple one. Some of them decided they were going to use it to make a pin cushion!

Now.. it’s written for knitting on needles. However it can be done on a knitting loom easily. Go and look over my Making mitered squares on a knitting loom tutorial. Then simply use a small gauge, or extra small gauge loom, a mini wonder loom, or adjustable loom works best for this; then follow the pattern!

Enjoy!

Here is the link to download the pattern! mitered-square-heart-sachet

If you are a Noro-phile then today’s book review is definitely for you!

One of Potter Craft’s latest is all Noro all the time, and it’s very nice!

Knitting Noro: The Magic of Knitting with Hand-Dyed Yarns By Jane Ellison, explores the many wonders of one of the knitter’s favorite yarns Noro. There is nothing like Noro, that mysterious self striping yarn that comes in many flavors and colors! From basic wool to cashmere and silk Noro offers it all, and this book explores the many looks you can produce when using this lovely yarn!

The book is broken up into some basic shapes, tank tops, the chunky cardigan, fitted cardigan, pullover, classic jackets, and wraps. They take these basic forms and spice them up, using different stitches, lengths and techniques to show off the yarn.

This book is a great book for the beginner, who is looking to move into the sweater realm. You can go simple to start and then ramp it up for a totally different look. And one of the great things about Noro is even if you make the same sweater as your friend.. they will have a totally different look! So I see this book as a great knit along volume as well!

WOW! How have I missed this yarn so far! I LOVE IT!!

It is so smooshy, and soft and warm!

It is easy to work with and the colors are beautiful!!

I have started a Maja wrap from the latest Knitty, and it is also a fun pattern. Thought I seem to keep adding extra increases.. But I put that little blue yarn bow on the right side to help eliminate that! Also the pattern is pretty forgiving so I have been able to fudge it a little to compensate for my extra stitches!

So far so good. Tomorrow morning though, I pick up a loom! Got a lil’ stitch pattern to try out! Plus I need to dig around for some longer needles for this one!

Have you ever been at a fiber festival and seen some lovely hand spun yarn and ultimately decided not to get it because you just weren’t sure what you would make with it? Or do you love to spin, but then don’t know what to do with your own yarn? (cough, Ashley, Cough)

Many moons ago, my Mother gave me some lovely hand spun yarn she had bought at a local festival. It sat forever in my stash. Some how hand spun gives some knitters knitter’s block and that is what this yarn did to me! It wasn’t until I found a 100 year old loom knitting book that I decided that the yarn was perfect for a stitch found in that book!

Well luckily for you, you don’t have to go searching out old books to find the perfect project for that hand spun yarn that catches your eye.

A new book A Fine Fleece: Knitting with Handspun Yarns by Lisa Lloyd is the go to book for this purpose. Lisa gives descriptions of many different fibers and their qualities by creature, also giving tips as to what sort of project each is suited to. She also gives tips to spinners on choosing and spinning the yarn with a particular project in mind.

The patterns are broken up in to different categories exploring themes:

Light and Shadow: Studies in Contrast
Forest and the Trees: Scale and Perspective
Conceptual Stitches and Emotive Design

All the patterns are beautiful. I don’t think there is one that I wouldn’t like to do given the time.

My first impression of this book was to think it would be another ‘knock off’ of The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, but it is far from that. It is definitely a companion guide for spinners that can stand on it’s own!

The second book Tweed: More Than 20 Contemporary Designs to Knit by Nancy J. Thomas. This is a nice little volume devoted to the tried and true yarn that is tweed. I know that tweeds often throw off people. They don’t quite know what to make of it, or with it. It is so thoroughly engrained in the weaving side of things that often knitters do not consider it.

This book will definitely change your opinion and give you some great history of tweed, as well as some great knitterly things to do with it!

I know my biggest fear with tweed was that I thought that I would have to just do miles and miles of stockinette, I thought that any pattern stitches would get lost when worked in a tweed yarn. Nancy quells this fear, by giving great tips on pattern stitches with tweeds and then goes on to give a boat load of examples of stitch patterns that work with tweed. All in all this is a great little volume and would be a great addition to any knitter’s library!

And my loom knitting friends… This one is coming soon…!!! I can only say right now that I know it has 3 great designs in it by someone you know well ..hehehe oh .. well ok… I am sure they are all great!

I jumped at the opportunity of a sneak peek at More Big Girl Knits: 25 Designs Full of Color and Texture for Curvy Womenby Jillian Moreno & Amy Singer.

Let me say one thing.. this book RAWKS! This second volume is dedicated to exploring color and texture in knits for ‘big girls’.

The first section is jam packed full of style secrets and tips for using color and texture to flatter your figure! Also included is a great measuring guide, including a fill in the blanks chart for you to keep track of your figures, as well as a yarn yardage chart to help you determine how much yarn you will need to complete your projects.

You also have to love the Pattern ratings:

“Half-Caf (Brain Nudge) straightforward knitting sith shaping
Expresso (modest amount of brain fuel) shaping, color work, mutliple stitch patterns
Triple-shot caffine bomb with whipped cream (all brain cells on full) complex shaping with multiple things happening at the same time”

(Do you think they have that last one at Starbucks?)

Of the 25 designs in this book, there is NOT ONE that I am not jealous of! I would make all of them, and I don’t often say that about knitting books!

This one is not quite out yet; it is set to come out on April 1st. But you can pre-orderit so you can have it ASAP!!

There once was a knitter who made some felted slippers designed by Cat Bordhi with some Southwest Trading Company Karaoke yarn…

And she was happy!

Then one got a hole it it and she was sad.

Then one cold March day her husband went on a business trip to nice warm Texas, and the next morning when she woke up it started to snow..

And snow..

and snow, until the snow was almost up to her knees!

So the knitter, not having any tall boots of her own (except those sexy ones with stiletto heels) went to borrow her son’s boots so she could start shoveling the driveway, so she could possibly have the job done by the time her husband needed to be picked up from the airport (4 days later..)

But one of her son’s boots was missing its liner! “Grr, Argh” and “Shoot!”, said the knitter! “What will I do?!” “My poor foot will freeze in this boot!”

Then she thought and thought.. and she remembered the nice felted slipper she had made and she went and fetched it. It was just right!

And so the knitter went off and did some shoveling..

Will she get the shoveling done in time to get her husband from the airport, in for days time at noon??? Time will tell.. we shall see…pretty soon!

I recently purchased a copy of Going Straight by Ruth Paisley aka Wooly Wormhead on Lulu.

Buying books through Lulu is nice because you have the option to buy the book as a pdf and download it or buy it as a regular book with various binding options. To top it off the packaging the Lulu does is genius! It would take 10 rampaging rhinos to do any damage to the item inside! I was impressed.

I saved up a bit because I wanted the spiral bound copy of the book. I dunno, I just rather have an actual book in my hands. The book itself is beautiful! Wooly Wormhead does and excellent job laying out all the necessary techniques needed to accomplish the patterns in the book with beautiful large bright photo illustrations.

The hat designs are lovely and actually quite impressive as all of them are knit on straight needles. I have always loved her hat designs, they are creative and fresh and fun. The designs in her book are no exception.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interestedin making hats but is circular or double pointed needle phobic! And if you would just like to try out one ofher designs, then you can also go to her website and pick up a pattern or two there, there are even a few for free!

Enjoy!

Remember this?:

Well enter it’s match! Twinkles Weekend Knits: 20 Fast Designs for Fun Getaways<img border="0?" width="1?" src="http://www.knitchat.com/wp-admin/http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=knitchat-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0307346137?" alt=""" height="1?" style="border: none" />

Wenlan Chia fashion designer/ knitting designer has done it again. A book full of knits with her signature chunky yarns. Talk about a quick knit! I had two sleeves of the done in two hours! Unfortunately, I had another project take priority or I would definitely be showing you a finished object by now!

This book is broken up into three weekend getaway categories:

Friday Night: Twinkle through the night.

Saturday Morning: Fun alfresco!

Sunday Afternoon: Last night away.

Friday night is filled with knits for your night out, a lace wrap, a sexy cowl neck tunic, and even hanger covers for unpacking for your weekend getaway.

Saturday morning is all about fun in the sun! Sweaters for relaxing and even a cozy for your iPod!

Sunday Afternoon includes some more complex designs in serene color palettes, the cloudburst cardigan is sure to be an eye turner, and some interesting techniques like feather and fan stripes, knot ridge stitch, and a wrapped yarn increase add interesting details to the pieces in this section.

All in all I love this book. Wenlan’s bulky knits are not for everyone, but I like the bold look and the quick results, and there are also knits in finer weight yarns that are sure to please.

The book is set to be released next week, so look for it in your local bookstore, or you can always preorder!!

Just a little note if you get the show Knit and Crochet Today on your PBS station they did an interview with Wenlan Chia in episode 105, their cables episode. You might want to check it out!

You can only ignore your laundry so long.. Then the piles start to attack! The kids start running around the house naked. and you can’t find something decent to wear.

Sigh.

Just when will the invent self cleaning laundry?

Enter.. Elizabeth Zimmerman.

Yes.. Elizabeth Zimmerman. See she must have foreseen that I would need something to do whilst endlessly folding load upon load of laundry.. the part I really hate! (especially the matching of the socks!)

So she and her daughter taped this really great series of shows about knitting. One of the benefits of being in my knitting guild is that they have an extensive library of these videos. So I borrowed some, and off I went folding away as I watched. On occasion causing my husband to run in from the next room when he heard me exclaim, WOOOOOWWW, or GENIUS, to see just what I was going on about.

Needless to say, my laundry is nearly done, and the knitting lobe of my brain has grown at least two sizes.. and I have only watched 5 of the tapes!

If you have the opportunity to borrow or obtain these videos I highly recommend them. They are much likeher books intermingled with little bits of life and fun as Elizabeth and Meg, and various others interact. Not left out are the cats and the camera man who interjects when they are checking their math on occasion!

All in all the videos manage to keep me from running out of the room screaming when the laundry attacks.

My mission for the next bit is to do some reading and learning. I also plan to get some ‘official’ knitting credentials on my resume starting with the CYCA certified knitting instructors program. With that in mind the following books have been procured and added to my library..

I had planned to buyThe Knitter’s Book of Yarn: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing, Using, and Enjoying Yarnby Clara Parkes (of Knitter’s Review fame) at Rhinebeck, and get her to sign my copy. That carefully thought out plan was thwarted by the publisher when they offered me a review copy. Now who am I to turn down a free knitting book? So rather than a signed copy, Clara, also agreeing that no one should turn down a free book, kindly signed the back of my Blogger Bingo card, so I might paste the sentiments into the book when it arrived. I planned, sight unseen to keep this book forever.. and now that I have it… not even the temptation of 10 pounds of qiviut could pry it from my hands.. er.. well.. I don’t think so. A full review later. Lets just say I am devouring this book quite in the same manner my children are devouring their Halloween candy!
Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Knitting Workshop, if my brain looked skinny before reading this book, it has gained about 10 pounds after getting through about 1/2 of it. I have learned so much from this book and I think that even dedicated loom knitters would benefit from this one! So if you are at the library and they have it check it out!
This one hasn’t hit my mailbox yet so it is not in the pile but I thought No Sheep for You: Knit Happy with Cotton, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Bamboo & Other Delightsby Amy Singer, was a must have! I made a trade for this one on Ravelry, and look forward to learning a bit more about these non-wool fibers, though this book might be a bit redundant after reading the Yarn book.
Barbara Walker’s Knitting from the Tophas been tauted as a must read. I will be looking at this one carefully, and seeing how knitting from the top can best be applied to looms!
A beautiful volume fit for the coffee table is the book Unexpected KnittingDebbie New nudges the creative side of knitting in this book, which includes a knitted lace BOAT!! yes.. you heard me right, a knitted boat! (and yes it floats!)
Modular knitting is demystified in Dazzling Knits: Building Blocks to Creative Knittingby Patricia Werner, I am hoping that I can wipe de-mist from my brain and learn some of these techniques!
Another review copy came along with the Clara’s book,Kaffe Knits Again: 24 Original Designs Updated for Today’s Knittersthis book is gorgeous! Another coffee table book for knitters! I had to immediately look up the location where the photos were taken.. and sigh… it is in England.. Anyway a full review on this one later too!
I alsorecently added Marla Richard’sKnitting Board Book to my library as well. This is a great little volume for loomand board knitters. Great instructions on many of those ‘fancy’ stitch patterns like cables, and ripples and lace and all for knitters who balk at needles!!
An old classic Mary Thomas’s Book of Knitting Patterns is another great one to wade through slowly.. trying EVERYTHING out as you go. The organization of this book is so well thought out, each technique is explained, then built on I have barely had time to touch the surface of this one and plan to have a whole lot of swatches by the time I am done with it!
And what knitter doesn’t need a little know how with a hook? Crocheting School: A Complete Course should help with that, but I think I might just pick up a crochet class at the local Joann’s as well.
Last but certainly not least, the DVD A Knitting GlossaryI picked this up at Rhinebeck as you know, and it is very much worth every penny and more! Not really an item for new knitters, but if you are in the advanced beginner, or intermediate level, then you will want to add this to your Christmas list! I am surely glad I picked this one up!

I will have to share some of my other goals tomorrow.. let the learning commence!

WOOO HOOO!!

Specs:

Heart Hat

Pattern : Elizabeth Zimmermann,

Book: Knitting Workshop

Yarn: Cascade 220, used a bit of each skein.

Needles: Addi US #6, 16″

Alterations.. none really. I pretty much just followed the pattern blindly!

Changes I would make: None really except to use a longer needle, the 16 inch was a little tight.

What I learned: How to knit an applied i-cord after the fact! Genius!!

Love it!! Would be an easy pattern to translate to the loom, a small gauge or extra small gauge loom would work fine. The decrease rows in the heart part would be a bit fiddly, but it’s worth it!
