Well actually this one will be 2 of 9. I am planning out a little introductory project for newbie loom Knitters. Designed to get me to stop needle knitting for a bit to continue to rest my left thumb.
So far, it’s almost working
So this will be one square for a blanket. Having been inspired by the "Hexapuff" craze on Ravelry, I thought I would work on a bit of a loom knit version.
The yarn I used for this square is the new Martha Stewart Crafts yarn Alpaca Blend.
I was sent a few samples as well as a Martha Stewart Knitting and Weaving Loom set.
The yarn is delightful! I will definitely be getting more!
The loom set is wonderful! It is so versatile and easy to use! I can easily see this being my new go to loom!
I am planning a little video review, along with a fun little free pattern some time in the next few days.
So keep an eye out for that and more squares as well!

Resistance is FUTILE! You will be i-loom-inated!!

The weather is heating up. Well, at least it sure was hot in Texas.. And so it’s a good time of year to start thinking about small projects that are portable and small for summer knitting!

Traditionally this means socks. They are great for travel, knitting small and portable, but not everyone is into socks! (I am a case in point!) For some a shawl is the favourite travel knitting project, but let’s face it they do get big, and they are usually made of wool, so they get hot as well!

So what to do?

Perhaps these books can give you some ideas!

First up is One Ball Knits Purses by Fatema, Khadija and Hajera Habibur-Rahman.

I am very excited about this book because I have quite the collection of bag handles hanging about! Each one of them a different style, and some antique. This book has a bag for EVERY ONE of them!

With the one skein approach I can also clear out those odd balls of yarn I have languishing in my stash!

Then there are the bags that I just want to knit so I HAVE to get the handles! Like this one:

All in all this book is full of fast, easy, fun projects that are sure to appeal to all. I know I will be making at least 3 of these this summer! Join me?

Next up is The Best-Dressed Knitted Bear by Emma King. This book is full of adorable bears and cute little outfits for them to wear!

The book is categorized into three groups: simple, intermediate, and complex; each with two sizes of bear: small and large. This means there is a bear in there for any level of knitter!

The outfits are absolutely adorable! From pirates to graduates, princesses and fairies, there is sure to be a bear there for someone you love to knit for!

Not only are these bears great small projects for summer, but they would make great charity knits as well!

The last book of the day is Knitted Babes by Clare Garland. I have been meaning to get this book for a while and I am glad I did! The characters that fill this book are adorable and fun! And it also give you a chance to do a little sewing to make their outfits! Mix and match and have a good time creating looks for them! What more could a girl want?

I have created a button on my sidebar and hope that some of you will consider supporting her, and donating to this very important cause. She’ll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

To that end.. all the proceeds from my pattern sales in the month of April will go to support Anna’s efforts!

I love today’s book, for a very specific reason: It teaches you something! Yep.. and darn it all, it involves MATH! Yikes.. yep who knew I would like a book that teaches math! Hey as a former teacher, home schooling mom, and sometimes knitting instructor yes this book appeals to me for that reason!

Knits for Bears to Wear: More than 20 Fun, Knit-to-Fit Fashions for All Teddies and Toys Including 18-Inch Dolls by Amy O’Neill Houck, is a great little book! For anyone with a teddy bear collection, or with 18 inch dolls this book is a great find. Or, if you are like me and have a little guy who has a favourite stuffed dog who could use a sweater, this book is for you!

Like I said above this book teaches you something. Each pattern is customized for the size of your stuffed friend or doll by you! Yes. You! Amy provides a little “customizing sidebar’ for each of the projects. You knit up a swatch, pop in the measurements of your toy, and the gauge of your swatch and off you go to a custom fit item for your toy! So rather than blindly following a pattern you learn a bit about customizing! Done in a small way, you can then apply these nice skills to bigger projects down the road! Nothing wrong with that!

Over all the designs are adorable, so if you do choose to simply follow the patterns as written you can’t go wrong.

I might just get ambitious and try to make a matching hoodie for my little guy and his little stuffed doggie. We shall see.. I have a few projects in the works so it’ll have to wait till at least May..

And coming soon (out May 5th) is also The Best-Dressed Knitted Bear: Dozens of Patterns for Teddy Bears, Bear Costumes, and Accessories by Emma King, It looks good too, I’ll let ya know!

Now.. it’s written for knitting on needles. However it can be done on a knitting loom easily. Go and look over my Making mitered squares on a knitting loom tutorial. Then simply use a small gauge, or extra small gauge loom, a mini wonder loom, or adjustable loom works best for this; then follow the pattern!

Enjoy!

Here is the link to download the pattern! mitered-square-heart-sachet

If you are a Noro-phile then today’s book review is definitely for you!

One of Potter Craft’s latest is all Noro all the time, and it’s very nice!

Knitting Noro: The Magic of Knitting with Hand-Dyed Yarns By Jane Ellison, explores the many wonders of one of the knitter’s favorite yarns Noro. There is nothing like Noro, that mysterious self striping yarn that comes in many flavors and colors! From basic wool to cashmere and silk Noro offers it all, and this book explores the many looks you can produce when using this lovely yarn!

The book is broken up into some basic shapes, tank tops, the chunky cardigan, fitted cardigan, pullover, classic jackets, and wraps. They take these basic forms and spice them up, using different stitches, lengths and techniques to show off the yarn.

This book is a great book for the beginner, who is looking to move into the sweater realm. You can go simple to start and then ramp it up for a totally different look. And one of the great things about Noro is even if you make the same sweater as your friend.. they will have a totally different look! So I see this book as a great knit along volume as well!

I wanted to pull up the I-cord tutorial for you all again as it is used for two of my sweater projects that are featured in the new Loom Knitting Pattern Book.

You can find and download the free tutorial by just clicking here!

Print yourself out a copy to tuck in the book, and you will have a little extra resource as you work! For full disclosure the I-cord cast on instructions were erroneously left out when the book went into print so here is the text that should be in the pattern notes of both patterns:

I-cord cast on: Make an I-cord the number of rows directed in your pattern. Hold the I-cord behind the pegs of the loom, and parallel to the base of the loom. Using the knitting tool, lift one leg of the stitch on the first row of the 1-cord up and onto a peg from behind. Work up one row on the I-cord, lifting stitches from the I-cord onto the loom. Work two rows of the I-cord, skip one and work two more. Continue in this manner until the desired number of stitches has been cast onto the loom.

You might want to highlight that text, right click on it and print selection and tuck that in your book as well! These things happen but not to fear, we have it covered!

I will be working on an publications page that will have pdf’s of the errata from my books so look for a new tab to pop up over the next few days!

Azia and I went to Wine and Wool today. It was rather small, but I understand there was some difficulty when the main person organizing the event had to step down. We also got there late in the day so I am not sure if people had already left or not.

Made a great connection though! I met the owner of the new Yarnia shop! Melissa. She is super nice. She had a lot of great yarns there, and it sounds like the shop is going to be great!! A cafe, classrooms, and yarn of course! Looks like I will be working on switching the Stitch n’ Bitch group to a new location! She was very receptive to us meeting there.. (yes Ashley.. you are double doomed!!)

She also had two things at the festival that I have been dying to get, but really didn’t want to pay the shipping on to order online.. The Lucy Bag Pattern, (I need to do something with all the wool I have since I can’t really wear it!) and the The Knitter’s Handy Guide to Yarn Requirements. It is awsome!! I don’t know what I have done without it!!

I whipped this up last night on my knitting board..

I needed a serious break from work knitting!! And this sure fit the bill.

I need to weave in the ends, and maybe I will wear it to church tommorrow.

I also made yogurt.. Kansas will be beaming at that! Hopefully it will be good!

All in all A good day..I’m energized…how’s about you?

PS. The fall sale on my patterns will continue through the end of October! Remember all you have to do to get $1 off each pattern is to enter the code fallsale and it will give you the discount! Enjoy!

I am taking a day off from some ‘work’ knitting to regroup and reorganize and do some jobs I have neglected over the last few weeks days.

I went to the local craft shop that is closing because I needed buttons, but they were out! I really wasn’t going to buy anything but then I spotted this basket that is perfect for keeping my knitting boards organized. Then I saw they were selling some shop fixtures including some great metal bins that would be perfect for keeping my stash in! Better than the flimzy ones I have now so I am re-allocating some stash, and hoping to cover the cost of the bins at the same time!

I am switching over to E-Junkie to store and deliver my patterns. So it seems like a good time to have a sale!

It will take me a few days to get all the patterns switched over, and the new sale pages up so bear with me!

On any pattern sale page that you see this add to cart symbol… that means I have switched that pattern to E-Junkie, so you can use the coupon code: fallsale and you will get $1.00 off the price of the pattern!*

So celebrate with fall with me and enjoy some savings! It’s a great time to get your Christmas knitting started!!

And if you sell patterns or other printed materials online, I highly reccomend E-Junkie they are by far the most reasonable digital storage and delivery company on the web that I have found so far!

Really quick.. I used some yarn that Lynn Markman sent me.. some really pretty stuff, and made a sock on my little knitting board! It looks pretty good.. I need to make the second one.. I only brought 1 ball of the yarn with me.. and I need to make some more to tweak it a little.. but I think it will turn out nicely. It of course, being double knit, is a house sock.. or as I prefer to call it a Catskills Cottage Sock! See it already has a name!

Lynn’s yarn is so nice. It is really springy which makes it a winner for loom knitting.. and from what she tells me this is her ribbon winning yarn from the fair. It won for the dye work on the skeins. It is pretty. A black and blue barber pole effect and the blue has some variation in tone lighter and darker.. which makes it even more interesting! I give it two thumbs up myself!! So if you get a chance to try Lynn’s yarns do it!!

It’s a loomed version of one of their needle knit hats. I think that it works better as a loomed hat as there is no seaming! Woo Hoo! So if you want to see how I did it pop on over to Loom Out Loud and check it out! Enjoy!

Poor Hattie is looking a little ragged! Someone in the house decided to chew on her.. and it wasn’t the dog! Hmmmm

Here is a little free pattern for you all!

Materials

Regular or large gauge knitting loom (for sample I used the red Knifty Knitter)

Worsted weight 100% cotton yarn of your choice holding two strands together throughout (I used white throughout with two other colors added in)

Knitting tool

Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Size:

This will vary per loom used mine is about 9″x15″

Pattern:

Cast on 3 stitches (cable cast on is best)

Row 1: K3, M1* (4 stitches)

Row 2: S1, P3, M1 (5 stitches)

Row 3: S1, K4, M1 (6 stitches)

Row 4: S1,P5, M1 (7 stitches)

Continue in this pattern until you either have a loop on every peg of your loom, or until you have reached your desired width ending with a purl row. (refer to diagram below)

After you have the peice at your desired width continue as follows:

Row 1: Move the first loop from the first peg on the left to the second peg. Skip that first peg and wrap and knit to the end of the row.

Row 2: M1, Purl to the end of the row, being sure to purl the two loops on the last peg together.

Repeat these two rows until the peice reaches your desired length. So you will be decreasing on the left and increasing on the right at the beginning of each row.

Measure the right side edge to check length ending with a purl row, once desired length is reached continue as follows:

Row 1: move the loop on the first peg to the second peg. Skip that first peg and wrap and knit to the end of the row.

Row 2: Move the loop from the first peg on the right to the next peg in toward the center. Skip that first peg and purl the rest of the stitches to the end of the row.

So at this point you are decreasing one stitch at the beginning of each row.

Repeat these two rows until you have three loops left on the loom.

Bind off.

Weave in your ends, and put a fork in it cause it is done!

*to make a stitch wrap the extra peg as seen below in the photo, this makes a new stitch and a nice edge..

I will try to pop this into a PDF for download later today. For now enjoy and remember the special sale price for the new Pinwheel Baby Blanket ends on the 10th!

Way back when, in way back when time.. I made a nice little door mat/ hearth rug as a wedding present for my friend. It all started when I was on the phone with her just before I walked into a thrift store. When I went inside I found this unloved spool of hand spun super bulky wool. It was serendipity! you have to watch out for that!

Here it is..

First I made a strip of garter stitch, it was about 18 inches long by about 6 stitches wide.

Then I cast off all but 3 stitches. I worked an I-cord with those stitches for a while, then switched it to my spool knitter. I knit on that I cord for you know a few weeks off and on.. I just kept laying it out and seeing how it was looking till it looked about right to me.

Then I bound that off and started another garter stitch strip, kept knitting that till I had it long enough to go all the way around and put it all together!

I was still finishing it on the morning of the wedding.

I actually put the final touches on it between the wedding and the reception (there was like a two hour gap and it was close to home)

I ran to Kmart and got some of that Martha Stewart shelf liner stuff.. the rubbery type. (it’s much cheaper than the actual carpet liner stuff)

Grabbed some self stick velcro, and put it all together!I simply trimmed up the shelf liner, stuck some strips of the grabby part of the velcro on it, and stuck it to the underside of the rug!

Easy peasy! And Voila, a nice little hearth rug!

I tell ya.. You make a little thing for a little challenge by a person and then they wanna know how you did it. So remember this?

Here you go.. how I made it.

Here you go.. how I made it.(yes I said it.. I have only made one.. yes I do have two feet but hey waddya want?)

Here you go.. how I made it.(yes I said it.. I have only made one.. yes I do have two feet but hey waddya want?)Yarn: Casscade fixation some pink color.

Loom: Decor Accents Extra Fine Gauge Sock loom (mine is the 9 inch size.)

Ok. This loom gets a gauge of 7 stitches to the inch. So I measured around my big toe and it was 3 inches round.. (yeah I couldn’t believe it either)

So that meant I needed 21 stitches to make the toe part.

So I cast on 21 stitches with teh cable cast on, and worked it as a flat peice for an inch. Then I snipped off the yarn leaving a 3 inch tail.

Ok.. then I cast on the rest of the stitches remaining. I knit those in a flat peice for an inch as well, though I probably could have gone 3/4 of and inch and been a bit better for my stubby little toes.

Then I just started on the next row knitting in the round. I went till the whole thing was 3 inches total. Then cast off.

Then I turned it inside out and seamed up the between the toes area in a whip stitch seam.. starting from the tip of the big toe, down and then back up to the other opening. I used a whip stitch because it would be a nice flat seam and wouldn’t add bulk between the toes!

That’s it!

Due to the stretchy nature of the Casscade Fixation, I didn’t feel the need for any ribbing anywhere. But If you use regular sock yarn be sure to add some 1×1 ribbing for about a half and inch at the start for the toes, and again a half an inch worth at the end of the foot part.

I think you could get about 2 pairs or more out of one skein of the yarn. It really didn’t take that much. One of these days I will work it out with toes.. rumor has it I have a small gauge wonderloom out there with my name on it.. that will probably be the best thing to work on toe socks with! Enjoy!

I will work out a more detailed tecnical do this swatch that pattern later and throw it into a pdf.. but for now I have to get dinner in the oven!

I made this little hat to take to the Knitter’s Fantasy for the Caps for Kids contest.. Then I forgot to take it!

The little corkscrews were supposed to go on the top as a crazy topper for the hat. I thought I would share with you how I made them. It was quite easy and quick and they would make a great fringe for a scarf!

The larger one was made with Lion Brand Jiffy on the red Knifty Knitter loom, the little one was made with Knit Picks wool (a worsted weight) on my fine gauge toddler sock loom from Decor Accents.

Note: Keep in mind these are general directions that will work on basically any loom. You will need to use yarn that is appropriate for your loom so you will get a rather tight knit. Use chunky or bulky weight yarns on the Knifty Knitter looms and worsted weight if you have a small gauge loom.. The more stitches you cast on the longer your corkscrew will be. I cast on all the pegs on both looms that I used.

Ok here we go:

Corkscrew Fringe

Cast on at least 20 pegs on your loom. I recommend the cable cast on as it is a nice and tight cast on. (Thanks Isela!)

Then turn as for a flat piece and skip the first stitch bringing your yarn from the back between the pegs 1 and 2 to the front of your work.

1. Knit the stitch on the next peg using the flat stitch. (That is where you simple hold the working yarn in front of the peg above the loop that is already there and lift the loop up and over the working yarn.

2. Then you will bring your yarn around the same peg (counterclockwise) with and e-wrap and knit off.

3. Then you will bring your working yarn around to the front of the same peg again (going around in a counter clockwise direction) and knit another flat stitch on that peg.

So you are knitting 3 stitches on the same peg.. flat, e-wrap, flat.

Then move to the next peg and repeat steps 1-3 again one peg at a time till you reach the end of the row.

Then turn and cast off purl-wise….

To cast off purl-wise:

1. E-wrap the first peg and knit off then move tot he next peg and e-wrap the second peg and knit off.

2. Lift the loop off the first peg and place it on the second peg.

3. Pull the bottom loop up and through the new loop as if to purl, lift the upper loop off and behind the peg and place the lower loop onto the peg.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 till all pegs are cast off. Then cut your working yarn leaving a 3 inch tail and pull it through the last loop to secure.

You should have a nice little corkscrew.. you may have to give it a little twist get it to curl up a little tighter for you.

Here is a new free pattern for you to enjoy!

I also have it in PDF format below at the bottom of this post.

This scarf is a great starter project for those who are ready to branch out from the plain rectangular scarf. Knit in stockinette stitch on a knitting board, using a keyhole technique with a twist it is a fast knit. It makes a great neck warmer that stays put, and the crossed keyhole helps it lay flat.
You could make it in the color of your favorite ‘ribbon’ awareness organization, like in light pink for a breast cancer ribbon scarf or yellow to support the troops!

SIZE
1 rectangle 3 1/2 inches by 33 inches

MATERIALS
? Any worsted weight yarn of your choice.
? large or regular gauge double sided knitting board
(works great with the new Knifty Knitter pink long board)
? knitting hook
? Crochet hook
? Yarn needle
PATTERN NOTES
Front of the loom refers to the row of pegs that are closest to you as you hold the loom.
Back of the loom refers to the row of pegs furthest away from you as you hold the loom.
Stockinette stitch is starting with the yarn on the top 1st peg, take yarn to bottom 2nd peg, then up to top 3rd peg, down to bottom 4th peg, and so on till the end of the row . See Isela’s mini movies here for more information on this stitch.

Scarf
Cast on 10 pegs on the loom.

Knit the stockinette stitch for 24 inches

Keyhole panel

At this point you will split the scarf in half.
Wrap and knit only 5 pairs of pegs so that you are working only half the width of the scarf. Do this for 20 rows.

Break yarn.

Wrap and knit the other half of the loom in the same manner for 20 rows.

Break yarn.

Using a piece of waste yarn, remove each half strip separately from the loom. You will cross the two halves forming an X and place them back on the loom.

Basically you will place the stitches from the first 5 sets of pegs onto the peg sets from 6-10 and the pegs that were on peg sets 6-10 will go on 1-5. You are simply trading places.
Note: be careful not to twist the strips.

Work in stockinette stitch for 15 more rows.

Cast off.
Weave in ends. Wear it with pride!!
