Sleeping with the Enemy

This weeks’ softball game was a hoot! It started with the umpire walking out because the opposing team did not have enough girls to play.
Now the rules state that they can borrow a player. But that sure didn’t phase him! He mumbled they didn’t have enough girls so they forfeit as he rushed passed us like a tornado!
Well. The rules also state that we can play the game without an umpire if both coaches sign each other’s score books. And hey! my team was more than eager to lend them a player… ME! We were rescued by a big guy on a motorcycle who stopped by, who just also happened to be an Umpire!

So I went over to the enemies side. Now, let me tell you a little about the team. This poor team did have to forfeit last time because only two people showed up. Most of the team was made up of over middle age guys with middles over their belts. The rest of the team was made up of a girl who was afraid of the ball.. one that could actually play and a young man who was.. well.. not entirely all there mentally.. (He was sure eager to play though! ) and.. ME!

My team..made up of about 6 guys that can hit it out of the field and 4 of them were present. A handfull of girls that can hit, run and catch, a few of the afore mentioned middle age guys and well,ME!!

You do the math!

It was interesting being one of the strongest players on the team. I got around the bases at least 4 times, but each time I crossed home plate it did count because some one had gotten an out just before!
I even suprised my own coach who came over to me at first base after a nice infield hit on my part and looked at me as if to say “Is that Denise?”
I hardly got any knitting done between innings! Usually on my team we are up to bat a little longer so I can get a row done while waiting for my turn. Oh well!

We lost, we won. I don’t know.. I’m so conflicted!
